The main item on this disc, the early orchestral fantasy 'Spring Fire', could probably also be called Bax's Symphony No. '0', because in scale and structure it's certainly a symphony, and a fine one too. The opening, depicting dawn in a woodland after rain, is one of the most hauntingly atmospheric passages Bax ever wrote, and I guarantee that once you've heard it, you won't be able to get it out of your head. Nothing else in this big and muscular score is quite on that level of invention, but if you like Bax at all, you're bound to warm to the colour, romance and sheer epic heft of the work. The shorter peices are all worth hearing, though there's nothing in them to compete with Bax's better known orchestral works, like Tintagel or November Woods. Playing and recording, as throughout this Chandos series, are excellent.

Not perhaps the best place for a Bax novice to start (try the fifth or sixth symphonies for that), but essential for anyone who's fallen for his luscious musical language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous music, splendidly played 12 Dec. 2008
By G.D. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Along with their new release of the symphonies come these reissues of orchestral works, repackaged and recombined (in order to complement rather than compete with the new Handley release, I assume). Volume 2 provides us with his early Spring fire, almost a symphony in all but name (though somewhat loosely structured), and two of the northern ballads, as well as the Mediterranean and the Symphonic Scherzo.

The second Northern Ballad is a dramatic and dark piece, surprisingly different from his earlier symphonic poems. The language seems to have acquired an almost vehement edge; it is cold and bitter with mere glimpses of sunlight in between, yet inventive and full of orchestral color. The third (Cortege) is based on a march-like idea, and represents the Bax who is immersed in myth and fantasy we know from his earlier works. Mediterranean is a lighter and less memorable piece, The Symphonic Scherzo is not a major work either (it is based on a movement from a discarded piano sonata), but splendidly orchestrated (a pity that there is so little of worth to orchestrate).

Spring Fire is, however, a marvelous work. Lush and rich, reminiscent of fantastic mountains and deep, lush forest shimmering in the sunlight, it is a truly memorable work, full of the variations in coloring and temperature we expect from Bax; voluptuous, full of light, mysterious, and as good as any of the early symphonic poems.

Performances and sound quality are uniformly excellent. Spring Fire and the Northern Ballads - which makes up by far the majority of the disc - are must-hears, and overall this disc is strongly recommended.
