Product description
Box set containing four films from the popular 'Batman' film series. 'Batman' (1989) was the first big screen outing for Bob Kane's caped crusader. The streets of Gotham City are no longer safe for criminals, who are being picked off by a masked vigilante in a rubber suit - dubbed 'Batman' by the press. Reporter Alexander Knox (Robert Wuhl) teams with photographer Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) in an attempt to discover Batman's true identity - an investigation which leads them to the door of mysterious millioniare Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton). Meanwhile, crime boss Carl Grissom's (Jack Palance) attempt to rid himself of untrustworthy henchman Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) does not go according to plan, and after emerging physically - and mentally - disfigured from a vat of chemicals, Napier reinvents himself as the psychotic Joker. In 'Batman Returns' (1992), Oswald Cobblepot was abandoned by his parents as a baby. Thirty three years later, bent on revenge, he returns to Gotham City as the Penguin (Danny DeVito). First he begins a warped campaign to become Mayor, helped by millionaire businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken); next, he undertakes a mission to murder every first born son in Gotham - a plan which will avenge his own beginnings. Meanwhile, he has two adversaries to contend with: Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), the embittered ex-secretary of Max Shreck, and, of course, the old caped crusader himself (Keaton). In 'Batman Forever' (1995), former District Attorney Harvey Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) is terrorising Gotham City, when a new villain appears on the scene - the Riddler (Jim Carrey). Together they plot to discover Batman's (Val Kilmer) identity, using a device which can probe the human mind. Meanwhile, the caped crusader has been joined by Robin (Chris O'Donnell), whose trapeze-artist family have recently been slain by Two-Face. 'Finally, in 'Batman and Robin' (1997), Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (O'Donnell) have to stop the vengeful Mr Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) from taking over Gotham City by using his new ice weapon. To make matters worse, the venomous Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) decides to join forces with Freeze, so making an almost undefeatable double-whammy of a team. Luckily for the caped crusader and his rebellious ward, they can team up with a new tough and courageous new partner - Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone).

Boxed set including the first four Batman movies.
Batman (1989) Directed by Tim Burton see the start of the 4 films and a very strong start indeed. Inspired by Frank Millars Batman: Dark Knight Returns We get a strong/Dark Batman (Michael Keaton) storyline with the Joker being the main Villan (wonderfully played by Jack Nicholson)and the Gotham has a strong Gothic/Burton feel to it. 5/5 I love this film
Batman Returns. Burton Directed this movie also. Keaton Plays Batman again this time with the Penguin(Danny Devito)Max Schreck (Christopher Walkden)and Catwoman (Michelle Pffiefer), Line up for a wickedly twisted tale set against the Dark and Gothic Burton Gotham city. 4/5 Good cast, well acted, well written. I really like this film
Batman Forver The Directors role is handed over to Joel Schumacher though Burton remains onboard to produce. This outing sees Val Kilmer take on the lead role of Batman and the arrival during the film of Chris o'donnel as Robin. The Bat has 2 villians to deal with in the shape of Harvey Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) and the Riddler (Jim Carey) Both of which turn in good performances with Nicole Kidman also appearing as Psycholigist Doctor chase who is Batmans love interest in this movie. This film steps away from the dark gothic Burton Gotham in favour for a more colourful neon light approach. The story isn't the best but the performances make for a credible enough film. Harvey two face seems a little wrong in the costume and at times feels a little more like the Joker mark II though the Careys performance as the Riddler works with his OTT sytle of acting which outside of the role and maybe the mask usually grates for me. not the best but fun to watch and not as awful as some reviewers have said 3/5
Batman and Robin. Burton has left the franchise though Joel Schumacher stays onboard to direct again. Batman changes to George Clooney, Chris O'donnel is Robin again. The 2 Villans this time are Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarznegger) and Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman). You should always worry when in the credit list at the start of a film the 1st named actor isn't the lead! Arnie's name is 1st up followed by Clooney and a sense that the makers want to push the names in this film to make up for its short commings. The Burtonesque Gotham along with the darkness in the Batmans character seem nothing but a distant memory in this film. The Plotline is very thin and Arnies performance as Mr Freeze is very poor. They plotline offers him up as an evil villain but wants you to like him in for the good he can do. Obviously Mr Schwarznegger had long past the "Evils" of 1st Terminator film and the film company felt they can't make everyones favourite action movie hero ruthlessly evil. Well overall the film is watchable but you probably wont keep dipping back into it. 2/5 im not so keen but its watchable.
All 4 films have great blu-ray picture quality and great HD mutli-channel sound. Extras appear on all 4 movies and at these cheap prices a real bargain.
Then time goes by and you forget these movies it was with the release of Batman Begins that I dusted off the old VHS and watched again. About the Blu Ray the transfer's are pretty good with Batman and Batman Returns looking just as good as the other 2 efforts. Speacial features are a little light but thats not to much of a problem.
Infact the only problem is the films themselves. The 1989 Batman and 1992 Batman Returns both directed by Tim Burton are awsome Micheal Keaton is amazing as the dark and moody Batman as well as the quirky Bruce Wayne and Jack Nicholson's Joker is one of the greatest and most physcotic movie villains ever. The film is dark with lots of atmosphere with a good story and supporting characters with brilliant set pieces and quality special effects for its time. 3 years later Keaton returned as Batman this time forming a strange aliance with Michelle Peiffer's Catwoman and taking on Dany Devito's maniacle Penguin. As with the prievious movie this is quality stuff and while the Penguin is not up there with the Joker Devito does extremly well. This is just as good as the original.
Sadly then it all went wrong Batman Forever was the beginning of the end I dont know what went on but Tim Burton was still there but Keaton was gone and with it the brooding troubled Batman was gone. Val Kilmer gets the mask and cape to take on Jim Carrey's Riddler who is more annoying then anything and Two Face played by Tommy Lee Jones Two Face is ok but add to this Chris O' Donnell's Robin and the film is worth watching once but its not in the same class as the other two. Then comes Batman and Robin add Mr Freeze Poison Ivy Batgirl and unhinge your brain and its watchable. Not as bad as Batman Forever but not far off.
In closing if you can get it for a good price its worth for the first 2 movies and you may watch the others once. But it will be the Keaton classics you will probably watch over and over.
