About the Author
Elif Shafak is the acclaimed author of nine novels including The Bastard of Istanbul and Honour, and is the most widely read female writer in Turkey. Her work has been translated into over forty languages and she regularly contributes to publications including The New York Times, Guardian and Time magazine. Elif has been longlisted for the Orange Prize, the Baileys Prize and the IMPAC Dublin Award, and shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. There are two main problems with this book, firstly the "bastard" angle is sort of soap opera stuff which jars against the back drop of the genocide. This detracted from the main part of the story. Second, there is to much food in this book. The pace of the book is turgid. It isn't really necessary. On the other hand, there are some delightful light comedy touches.
Reading a translation can often be unsatisfactory.
