Product Description

From the Back Cover

30–minute training DVD contains bonus material specifically for your Basset Hound! Dog behavioral trainer Peggy Moran shows you how properly training your Basset Hound makes your best friend a Happy Healthy Pet for life.

"The clown of the dog world," the Basset Hound′s greatest joy comes from making family and friends laugh unless, of course, he′s snoozing on the couch or following the scent of a rabbit. With his good temperament, stout stature, and signature floppy ears, he has earned a reputation for being a beloved companion and a trustworthy scent hound.

Packed with full–color photographs, this fun and practical guide gives you everything you need to make your relationship with your best friend even better. Inside, you′ll find:

  • Characteristics to look for when choosing a Basset Hound

  • A list of supplies you′ll need before you bring him home

  • Advice on grooming, feeding, and training

  • A reproducible pet–sitter chart to keep track of important information

A bonus DVD shows you that educating your Basset Hound positively is easier and more fun than you think. You′ll learn how to teach your furry friend basic commands and tricks, correct inappropriate behaviors, and understand his unique personality.

Very easy to read but somewhat repetitive and unfortunately focused primarily on the American Basset. However it did give some good advice on Basset husbandry and basic care suitable for new owners. Personally I was hoping for a section on Basset friendly training but the this section of the book is openly generic demonstrated by illustrations of a collie type dog! You can find better information about Basset Hounds on the internet.

HASH(0x93f9887c) out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative Basset Hound Basics 6 Feb. 2012
By Ramona D. Marek - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Years ago my father said he loved Basset Hounds and always wanted one. At that time I bought him a stuffed Basset Hound that stayed next to his recliner for years. After reading "Basset Hound: Your Happy Healthy Pet" by Terry Albert, I realize what a good decision the stuffed animal was. Albert's book is chock-full of information anyone considering a Basset Hound as a pet should know. Yes, I believed the couch-potato stereotype until I read about the Basset's stubborn streak. That said, they are also highly intelligent, loving family dog for the right family.

Albert's straight forward style is easy to understand and quite interesting. I didn't know Basset Hounds are considered a "dwarf" breed and require special attention in terms of their build. For example, for the first year a Basset Hound puppy shouldn't jump at all because his bones are still growing and joints forming, and adults should be assisted in and out of the car or up on and off a bed or couch. Also, because they are a long-back breed there is a specific, safe way to carry a Basset Hound and carrying should be done by an adult, not a child. And because a Basset is chest heavy, descending stairs is not recommended because they can topple over.

Albert describes the Basset Hound good temperament, grooming basics and feeding tips. Additionally, there is a printed section and accompanying DVD by Peggy Moran for training your Basset Hound.

Reading "Basset Hound:Your Happy Healthy Pet" before getting your Basset Hound will ensure a positive, loving pet experience for the whole family. Highly recommended.

HASH(0x93f988d0) out of 5 stars Good Information 9 Jan. 2012
By Val - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This book is great overview of Basset Hounds and gives you an entertaining brief history. It helped me figure out why my basset was throwing up, why he is so whiny and other important things I never would have known about my little basset if I didn't have this book. The author spends most of the book telling you how different bassets are, which is why it is so surprising and irritating that the training section is full of different dog breeds. Why? Bassets can't be trained like other dogs because of their personalities and the basset death roll of no-compromise. So why is the training section not specific to bassets?

HASH(0x942e0c9c) out of 5 stars Book is good, not so much the video 5 Jun. 2014

The book is great! You learn lots of useful information. The video on the other hand is generic and does not cater to stubborn basset hounds.
