This came to a head recently when I managed to splash water onto my less-than-waterproof smartphone while I was listening to music on it. I'm glad to say that it somehow remained unharmed by its dousing in water, but it did strike me that perhaps I shouldn't be taking it into the bathroom with me or, at the very least, should be keeping it out of harm's way when I did. With this in mind, I thought that it would probably make sense if I was to get a waterproof speaker/radio type thingy and duly started rummaging through Amazon to see what I could find. Of course, I stumbled across this 'BassPal' speaker, which looked just the ticket - and since it was on sale at a reduced price, I snapped one up and had it in my paws the very next day - thanks again to Amazon Prime!
>>>WHAT'S IN THE BOX?
This little gadget comes wrapped in a very smart little box. Once opened, you'll find the speaker itself nestled at the top and a Micro-B USB cable for charging it with and a small set of instructions below a small compartment below it.
>>>SMALL BUT MIGHTY
When I first picked up the speaker, I was immediately struck by just how robust it felt. It feels tough and almost feels as though it could take a drop onto concrete and survive with minimal damage - but I wasn't about to test that theory. It's got a nice-feeling rubberized coating and the buttons feel similarly tough and have a nice sturdy 'click' to them.
>>>WHAT'S THE SUCKER LIKE?
Funny you should ask that, as this little speaker has got a MASSIVE sucker on the back of it. Quickly testing it out, I was able to stick it to one of my kitchen cupboard doors and marveled as it held onto it like like a possessed limpet. It's a tenacious little sucker, so it is.
I have however found that it doesn't stick very well to my smooth bathroom tiles, as it took an unintended plunge into the water after clunking off the edge of the bath. It seems to do this every time I try, so I'd urge you to be a little cautious and put in on flat and level surfaces instead.
>>>GETTIN' IT PAIRED
As with most bluetooth devices, pairing this little speaker with a smartphone is ridiculously easy. It just involves you having to hold down the power button for three seconds, then pairing your phone to it. Once paired, you're ready to rock.
>>>HOW DOES IT SOUND?
This is arguably the most important question of the lot, as this is a device with the modus operandi of listening to music through it. When I first turned it on, the booming voice of "POWER ON" was my first taste of what it was going to sound like and, quite frankly, it caught me off-guard as it was far louder and had much more bass than I expected. Quite excitedly, I fired up the Amazon Music app on my phone and browsed for something suitably bassy to play and span up Lorde's 'Royals'.
Now, as I do with all of my reviews of audio products, I should state here that I'm NOT AN AUDIOPHILE, so my opinion on what this gadget sounds like may differ to your own and to those who are used to listening to their music through audio equipment and speakers that cost more than my car did! I do however think that I've got a good ear for audio quality and actually think that this little thing sounds 'not bad'; certainly for its size and cost. As you might expect however, it's far from being perfect as it lacks sparkle at the high end and mids and as a result it all sounds a bit muddy. The bass hits above its weight though.
To get the best from this little speaker, you're better off playing some 'clean' sounding music through it, so well-produced pop music, electronica, classical, jazz, light rock music and the likes sound acceptable as they shouldn't tax it too hard. My preference for heavy guitars, metal and 'odd' music however tend to cause it to struggle; even heavy-ish bands such as Muse (at their heavier points) sound quite jarring through this little speaker as it struggles with the sonics of their heavy guitars and Matt Bellamy's vocal acrobatics. Overall however, this little thing is certainly good enough for bathroom hairbrush-singing and for keeping you entertained while chopping veggies in the kitchen and a million other scenarios that can otherwise be brightened up by listening to music.
>>>CHARGIN' IT UP
This speaker has a 650mAH rechargeable battery in it, which is apparently good for eight hours of audio playback. Charging it up takes a while however - it took about four hours for it to reach a full charge upon its first charge. On the plus side, it can be charged from any powered USB port, so that adds a good deal of flexibility.
It would be unfair not to mention this little speaker's pleasant light display while it's playing music, as the outer ring of the speaker and the grille itself lights up in a variety of colours while it's playing. It doesn't flash in time to the music or anything (which would be cool) but it certainly makes it stand out!
This little speaker also includes an FM radio on it but I'll be honest when I say that, despite my best efforts, I just couldn't get it to pick anything up. I've got another small radio which picks things up loud and clear, but for some reason this just doesn't seem to pick up even a bad reception to any stations - just static. Bah, who listens to terrestrial radio stations these days anyway?
>>>SLIPPERY WHEN WET?
Yes, the party-trick of this little speaker, of course, is that it's waterproof. While taking a bath I decided to test these claims - there's something inherently wrong with plunging a gadget into water, but I'm glad to say that this is indeed capable of taking a dip in the drink. Once it's been underwater the sound from it does take a hit in quality until the water has been drained out of it (blowing on the speaker grille helps, too), but I can't help but be impressed by its ability to carry on playing. It also floats quite happily on the surface of water, so you could in theory take this on holiday and listen to it while it bobs about on a swimming pool.
This is an pretty good little bluetooth speaker, which is tough and durable and has good battery life. The sound quality from it, while not great, should cause no major complaints considering its cost and it could be used in all sorts of situations - but it's obviously best suited to bathrooms and wet places.
Let's break it down into pros and cons:
+ Plenty of bass
+ Funky lights
- Its sucker is mostly good, but watch out for it 'letting go' on tiled surfaces
- Sound quality isn't amazing and its not suited to all types of music
- Radio reception is nonexistant
It comes in a really nice sturdy box. It was really easy to pair with my phone and once you read the instructions properly it is easy to use. The buttons are nice and big and it has a strong suction cup on the bottom if you want to use it in the bathroom. This unit is also waterproof and can be submerged in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. I haven't tried that yet but it states it can also float on water and it is certainly light enough to do this. I live in an area where my house is at the bottom of a hill and I have not yet been able to get the radio on this but am still trying. I have had this in my car for phone calls and they are so clear I just love this. If you want a hands free speaker this is just great. I love this so much I bought another one for my finance for Christmas. You really cant go wrong with this one. It also has a 30 day money back guarantee. Get this for you stocking filler, you wont be disappointed.
I received this product at a discount and am under no obligation to write this review.
Seems to turn on ok. But we’ll know if it’s fully working on Christmas. Went to reorder but delivery expected the 23rd so couldn’t risk it. Cancelled my return and will keep this.
It looks great, especially with the flashing LEDs - I got the blue version (as opposed to the grey) and it looks like it was made for water. On the reverse it has got a big suction cup which is the size of the speaker itself. It sticks very tightly to glass and other non-porous flat surfaces. It is a pity that they did not include a loop and carabiner for things like bikes and camping.
It takes 3 hours to charge and this will last 5-6 hours depending on whether you streaming to it or just using the radio. I consider this about normal for a small speaker as you only get longer play time from bigger batteries which mean bigger machines. A red LED ring lights up during charging (see photo) and goes off when charged. During use, you have the option of three LED modes: breathing, which is a gradual change from one colour to another, one colour on and finally off. You use the power button to select your preference for the lights. The radio mode is initiated with the “M” button and the reception can be improved by leaving the charging cable in however; this will negate the waterproof feature as you have had to expose an electrical port. Reception can be further improved with a longer cable.
The sound it produces is very good and definitely perfect for my intended use. It sounds loud and clear and so I have no complaints. Both the FM radio and streaming MP3 tracks have a nice bass and clear treble.
Pairing with my phone was simple and the buttons work as expected to skip tracks and modify the volume etc. Most functions are accompanied by a good quality voice prompt (see video). It has an in-built microphone to make and receive calls. What I really like is the waterproof rating. It has a rating of IP67 which means it is completely protected from dust and protected against the effects of immersion in water to depth between 15 cm and 1 meter which means that I can use it in the shower and also leave it outside for listening to music when I do a barbecue. It is a great little speaker and I thoroughly recommend it.
