Basket-rak is a tow-ball mounted carrier that rapidly mounts onto any tow-ball (including swan-neck or detachable). It can carry loads up to 75Kg in the convenient mesh basket that makes it easy to tie or lock down your loads. Working size is 1.25 metre by 66cm by 11cm deep and it folds to half the size to conveniently store in the car. It only weighs 8Kg. Available as an accessory is an attachment to allow fitting of up to three roof-rack type bike racks. If the car back lights are obscured you will need a lightbar. The rack is bright yellow to make it as safe as possible.

My car is fitted with a tow bar and I have seen bike carriers fitted to them, so I did a little research to see what was available. One of the products I came across was the 'bak-rak' which seemed reasonably priced and within my budget, able to carry more than one bike, simple to fit, and also avoid any likelihood of damaging the paintwork when attaching the carrier to the car.
Ordering was simple and delivery quick, and it was a few days before I got round to fitting and testing the 'bak-rak'.
The instructions were easy to follow. I experienced one slight problem when trying to fit the clam shell casting over the tow bar ball,it just didn't seem to fit, but a phone call to the help line was answered immediately and the extremely helpful guy suggested I check the locking grub screw to see if it was fully withdrawn. This solved the problem and the fitting of the carrier proved very simple and easy.
Using the 'bak-rak' proved no problem. The bikes were easy to fit on the carrier and as it is located safely behind the car this meant that the vehicle was not subject to cross winds, which can happen when carrying loads on the roof.
When not being used on our coast to coast trip the carrier was easy to swing and lock into the vertical position. When not required it takes only a minute to remove the carrier and locking clam from the tow bar.
In addition to the bike carrier the 'bak-rak' came with a metal mesh box carrier. I did not think I would use this but it has proved very useful when taking rubbish to the tip.It will also be extremely useful when we go camping.
All in all I fully recommend this product and would like to congratulate the company on the service provided and the excellent design of the 'bak-rak.
Installation wise it took me a while to get it to a level of tightness that I was confident in (and even then there was a little bit of lateral play although not much). I loaded it a bit too well and couldn't see it on the journey, for peace of mind I would recommend loading it so that you can see a tiny bit of whatever you are carrying in the rear-view! That said is was solid all the way so really I needn't have worried.
I would recommend pairing it up with a tarp (particularly if you drive around in the UK) and making sure that you have a towboard (or making your own) as on my car it covered the numberplate when laden.
As numerous online reviews state, people will ask you about it and I am only too happy to recommend it when asked.
If we go away we use the basket carry the lightweight, but bulky items, such are sleeping bags, pillows, kids toys, empty water container etc - leaving space in the car for the heavier stuff. We just cover them all with a polythene sheet to keep them dry. It is easily removed upon arrival - we hide it behind the tent so it doesn't get "borrowed". At home it hangs on the garage wall.
It's well built - I've even stood in it whilst loading stuff on my roof rack - I'm a little more than 65kg!
It was promptly delivered, and Bak-Rak answered my questions over the phone before I purchased the basket.
