Duane Bradley's brother is very small, very twisted, very mad and he lives in a basket...until night comes! After a difficult birth, which their mother didn't survive, Duane was born with a monstrously deformed Siamese twin, Belial, attached to his side. Embittered by the death of his wife and unable to accept his hideous son, the boys' father ordered the twins to be surgically separated. Surviving the operation, but deeply resentful of his enforced removal from his brother's side, Belial plans to get even with his father and the doctors responsible. Duane, normal looking but sympathetic to his brother's plight, moves to New York carrying with him a large basket in which his grotesque twin hides. Together they seek out the surgeons responsible for their violent separation and Belial wreaks his gruesomely bloody revenge... I really don't want to spoil the story for anyone who has yet to watch it and I'm sure anyone who has seen it doesn't need reminding what happens.
If you like your films high budget and riddled with CGI you probably aren't going to enjoy this film.
Somehow this film missed the Video Nasty list when first released, but that is probably because it was so far fetched and while gory has a element of fun to the story. Shot in and around the boroughs of New York (Manhattan/Queens/Brooklyn) on a miniscule budget by Frank Henenlotter the film has a wonderful grimy atmosphere throughout.
The Blu Ray Transfer itself is an improvement on the DVD and for a 16mm film is about as good as you can expect. The extras are limited to what we have seen before bar an introduction from Frank Henenlotter.
5 stars from a very happy Fan::-)
Henenlotter's bizzare atmosphere and original scare tactics make this movie also. He is honest in these outragous scenes of sex and violence which fit the movies character. Although at times the gore is quite graphic and the effects are dated it still has this effect thar grips the viewer. Overall an excellent movie which has its own points to say on family and emotions.
OK so it's over the top and bizarre in nature but the movie works for what it is. Sleazy, gorey and a well rounded told movie- we even have some character developement and a nice backstory.
Those of you that yearn for the old 'deuce' on 42nd street with the pimps and grindhouse cinemas will not be disappointed by this one- some wonderful historical footage. Basket Case would yield another 2 sequels- but this original movie stands head and shoulders above and could quite rightly be in a horror top 10 list of the 1980s.
A man carrying a wicker basket checks into a grubby hotel for a few nights. Suspicions are raised immediatley with his over protective attitude towards his basket. The collection of eccentric neighbours each have their own views on who this kid is but no one could be prepared for the truth!
The gore is fairly minimal and the monster is a bizarre creation of puppetry and stop motion. The acting is so far beyond wooden that if the actors stand still for too long they would be infested with wood mites!
Gloriously entertaining if you like your b-movie horrors low brow.
Belial, the Basket Case, is a grunting piece of plasticine who mauls people.
The film is a masterpiece because the acting is great and the script makes you care for this lump of plasticine.
I want to spend a night at the Hotel Broslin, where the film is set.

Weird little movie, acting none to clever, creature a bit like chewing gum, that someone's had in their mouth and spat it out. A cult movie for some, still not a bad little movie.Published 3 months ago by V. Pykett

Basket Case is awful. Fact. However, it's also brilliantly awful! Yes, the acting is pretty bad, the special effects really aren't that special and there are so many times where... Read morePublished on 3 Feb. 2013 by Albatross
Basket Case has a great story, sadly the execution doesn't quite match it and it falls just short of being a genuine classic. Read morePublished on 29 Jun. 2011 by West25
