Children will enjoy all the jokes inside here – most of them silly (“What do Mr and Mrs Ghost serve at their Christmas parties? Ice scream!). Still, sure to make children giggle and the Christmas theme is fun.
This book is a piece of fun for Christmas that would make a lovely stocking-filler, whether or not the child is a fan of Barry Loser. Obviously some of the detail will be lost on children who haven't read other Barry Loser books, but this can easily be read as a stand-alone book. It is essentially a groan-a-thon of corny jokes and fun "facts". Open it to any page and there's something that will make you roll your eyes or laugh out loud. There's an index at the front, if you're looking for a joke on a particular topic (family, reindeer, knock knocks, presents, school, food, parties, songs, snow and so on). For example:
Knock know. Who's there? The interrupting bum. The interrupting bum, wh... PARP!
What should you give a vampire for Christmas when he's feeling a bit ill? Coffin medicine!
What do Santa's elves learn at school? The elfabet!
Which Christmas treats are really nosy? Mince spies!
You get the idea.
There are some niggles. At around 134 pages of actual text, the book is half as big as others in the series. It comes on that rough off-white paper that isn't the best quality. There's one joke per page, so there isn't that much content.
For sale at the time of writing this review at £5.99.
To the right child, the book does work. The jokes are so bad that they are almost funny, but if you are the adult on the receiving end of them it can get wearing quickly. These are not very good jokes, but that is the point. The book itself features Barry Loser and I am not sure about him as a character. You don't glean anything about his personality in this book, but you do get plenty of Smith's illustrations. To my eye Barry is a funny looking chap with the type of nose that would not have gone amiss in Viz. There are not really enough jokes in this book to make it better than any other Christmas joke book. This is one for the Barry Loser fans.
The children loved them while the teenagers pretended not to like them but I could see a slight curve coming to the edge of their mouths(they want to be cool, which means not laughing at silly jokes).
This is a great stocking filler for younger kids but for me personally, the jury is still out.. I simply have to learn how to appreciate a good joke.😉😋
If your child is a fan of the Barry Loser series, they will likely find this even more hilarious, but you can definitely read this as your first glimpse into the hysterical world of Barry Loser.
Just remember, 'Any unfunny jokes were written by Barry's Dad!'
