I appreciated Jack’s relentless jokey references to characters, films and events of my distant youth. Readers, especially those who’ve not read the previous books, need their brains to be in gear to unravel who is who, because characters are always given silly names by Jack. This book makes a pleasant change from the doom and gloom often found in more formulaic detective thrillers. In A Barrow Boy’s Cadenza, characters are killed off or injured with gay abandon. I could sense the author’s thorough enjoyment whilst writing his book, which always makes for a great read. However, it’s not all japes and giggles. There are also several poignant scenes when the mood switches but it's not long before the author sweeps us off again on another gripping roller coaster ride that comes to a satisfying conclusion. I’ll definitely be reading other books in this delightfully charming, refreshingly unusual series.
If you want to be cheered up – you only have to pick up Pete Adams’ – “A Barrow Boy Cadenza”. I liked the humour within this story. It is a real gift to be able to make the reader laugh. The plot provides an alternative rationale for the current world economic crisis - told in a style reminiscent of silent movie humour. Recently Tarantino the famous film director whose films are characterised by satirical subject matter and violence said that what he loved to do was to encourage his viewers to laugh at scenes which they would never expect to find funny. I found this with Pete’s style of writing. As characters begin to drop dead all over the place – it is unexpectedly funny. At times I couldn’t believe that he really let some of those characters be dispatched – yet there is always a lightness of touch – a splash of black humour which reminded me also of Jose Cela's “The Family of Pascual Duarte”. Poor Pascual Duarte could not escape disaster happening all around him and so it is with Jack – an unlikely Inspector Closeau – who leads a campaign to remove greed from the world and to instil a sense of morality and economic recovery.
The writing is visual with characters sketched out in great detail – Jack is blind in one eye, scarred and yet totally loveable. Mandy is feisty, adorable and thoughtfully drawn. Her beauty contrasts with Jack’s physical deformities - yet her love for Jack is gentle and real – shaken by shimmering jealously and subtle envy. Pete conveys real warmth for each of his characters. A strength to the writing is the realistic, dialogue which injects pace and vitality into the story.
A Barrow Boy’s Cadenza is bursting with atmospheric youthful idealism and an irrepressible human spirit which will resist giving up on what is best in human nature. The world of Mandy, Jack, Jo Jums, Hissing Sid and Jamie Manners is a world of people caring about their relationships with one another and this gives the story such a feel good factor.
My favourite scenes are those in the final third of the book with the show down with the Prime Minister in Downing Street. I so loved the real characters of Cameron and Ed or is it Ted Miliband being introduced and later on the Queen and Prince Philip. Again it is the lightness of touch in the writing – the delicious sense of the absurd which comes through so strongly. Only a writer with a deep sense of being able to laugh at life and take it seriously at the same time could write a book like this. Well done!
