Format: Audio CD
A fascinating combinataion of the operatic soprano Kathleen Battle and the Jazz trumpet player and band leader Wynton Marsalis bringing their unique talents to a range of Baroque Duets. One of the most interesting and riveting performances I have heard for a very long time.

This is exactly the kind of populist recital that the Period Practice Taliban love to get their teeth into, therefore amidst the plethora of encomiums for this splendid disc you will find a handful of reviews and comments who make absurdly sweeping and hieratic statements about the performers' "lack of proper Baroque technique" and the singer's "dreadful tuning". Utter bilge, of course but such statements clearly serve their need for self-aggrandisement. One even orders us "Do not buy this disc"; I rest my case regarding their fascistic close-mindedness.

Meanwhile the rest of us may legitimately enjoy the lovely duetting here. The full 65 minutes at one sitting might be a little too much, as while the selection of musical numbers is perfectly balanced between the voice and trumpet, the combination of Battle's leggiero coloratura soprano and Marsalis's brilliant trumpeting can seem rather piercing and insistent in alt for all the intrinsic beauty and agility of both. The predominance of Handel reflects his fondness for this instrument and voice type but we also here some lovely Bach, Scarlatti and two more lesser Baroque composers. Everyone will be familiar with the "Let the Bright Seraphim", sung all those years ago by Kiri Te Kanawa in "That Hat" at the ill-fated Charles-Diana wedding and many will know the ethereally beautiful "Eternal source of light divine" from famous performances by countertenors such as James Bowman and Andreas Scholl. Battle sings it here with rather more vibrato but lovely line, complemented by Marsalis's steady, plaintive line. Both have extraordinary reserves of breath.

In lovely sound, with Battle recorded rather close - her voice is not large - this will bring great pleasure to all but the sparrow-and-rubber-tube fanciers.

The music is beautiful, the voice both powerful and nuanced and the trumpet masterly. Who could ask for more?

I only decided to write so as to express my gratitude to the performers and amazon for making it available for those who if not professional musicians can only by chance come across such magnificent CD. Everything about it the trumpet, the voice, the choice of barouque pieces is absolutely divine and I will surely be looking for more.
