John Pether says:
What a wonderful surge of interest in the novels of Alexander Baron - one of the most accomplished and overlooked writers of the 1950s and '60s. His two key books 'The Lowlife' - about a compulsive Jewish gambler in Dalston after the war - and his brilliant war novel 'From the City, from the Plough' are both available in good new paperback editions. So is 'King Dido' - a novel in part based on his visits as a child to his grandparents in the Jewish East End. Another war title 'The Human Kind' is still to come, and also about to be republished is a really wonderful London novel, 'Rosie Hogarth', set in Islington immediately after the war.
