Barclay is always a good beginning for any theological study and gives sound teaching. Good comparison with other scholars' work.

A good reference book for the New Testament. Not really enough detail for what I require but useful anyway

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BEGINNING COMPANION TO THE NT 28 April 2008
By Judy Sardello - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Granted, this book will not tell you everything you want to know about the NT. It is a book of 351 pages including the subject index. However, it will definitely entice you to buy his other writings on individual NT books. A guide such as this could be a very dry subject, emphasizing facts. But Barclay's style is very beautiful and flows as does a story, still including all of the intriguing bits of information (placed in the historical contexts) to get you started and then wanting to go further. Just as an example, he calls Matthew's gospel The Royal Gospel; Mark's, The Essential Gospel; Luke's, The Universal Gospel; and John's, The Precious Gospel. The titles themselves make you want to read what comes next. Of course all of the other NT books are discussed as well. There are invaluable discussions of the "authors" of the various books and why the names of the authors were attributed to them. Barclay is a master writer and has the ability to give life to the accounts of Jesus' time. This is an invaluable beginning to an in-depth study of the NT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful 16 Nov. 2008
By A. M. Reinhart - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I am in a weekly Bible study and many have quoted Barclay. This New Testament guide was very easy to read and understand. It was very helpful to me to see people and events through the eyes of Barclay. I was able to read and retain so much better with this guide than most reference books I have used prior. A must book for Bible studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clearly Informative 8 Aug. 2008
By ElaineS - Published on Amazon.com

Again, Barclay strikes a balance between scholaship and accessibility in his Guide to the New Testament. The reader learns why certain stories appear in one book but not in another, what languages the originals were written in (and why), plus interesting personal information about the writers of the New Testament. Informative and necessary information for anyone who aspires to understand the Bible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful New Testament Study Aid 9 May 2012
By UncleBobby - Published on Amazon.com

Barclay was a great scholar and linguist, who wrote his biblical interpretations for the common man. It is an excellent tool for those interested in learning the historical context of biblical events. Catholics should be aware that some of Barclays beliefs are counter to Church teachings. He did not believe in the Trinity, and he was a universalist (all men will be saved, even your mother-in-law)), and the multiplication of the fishes did not literally happen. Even so, the beloved Catholic theologian Bishop Fulton Sheen recommend the study are Barclay to priests, with the caveot that they ignore ideas counter to Church teaching. Catholics who want to avoid a potential minefield might prefer the Navarre Bible series which is similar, at least in format, to Barclay, and reflects Catholic thought.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Testament Guide 16 Nov. 2012
By Dave Lacey - Published on Amazon.com

This is another typical Barcly book, written through the eyes of someone who knows and loves the Scriptures. Again, this book shows the depth of Barclay's knowledge of both Greek and Hebrew to bring this subject to life. A valuable asset to both students and those whom have even a passing interest in the Gospels.
