Product Description

Product Description

Developed from a pilot screening in ITV's 1995 Comedy Firsts season, this acclaimed sitcom cast Gwen Taylor as Barbara Liversidge, a blunt-talking, heftily opinionated, advice-giving, occasionally ranting Yorkshirewoman. Sam Kelly (Porridge, 'Allo 'Allo) stars as Ted, Barbara's cab-driver husband of 35 years and a man who learned long ago to play second fiddle, while Sherrie Hewson (Coronation Street) is her nouveau-riche sister, Jean - victim of many a withering look and practised put-down. Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen), Joanna Van Gyseghem (Duty Free), Jean Alexander and Roy Barraclough (Coronation Street), and singer and actress Julie Driscoll also appear in this second series, originally screened in 2000 and 2001.

Ever since I first saw Barbara, around 6-7 years ago, I've wanted the show on DVD. I'm so glad it's finally getting released because this is one heck of a show. There is never a dull moment, the lines are very cheaky and rude - but there's a lot of love in it too. Some stories and lines may be a bit offensive and "too much" but it's too funny to get upset about, I promise you.

Gwen Taylor is Barbara Liversidge, a blunt talking, heftily opinionated, feisty and occasionally rating 52-year-old Yorkshire woman in this comedy series, witch is one of the best comedy series ever made. With other great characters in this comedy which also makes the series so great: Barbara's husband, Ted, a little daft yet very loving and caring taxi driver; Her son, Neil, who seams to have a different girlfriend every week; Her daughter, Linda and Son-in-law, Marin, running his own business on the local news show; and younger sister Jean, who's not got the body she was born with. All the cast do really, really well in this series, giving really fantastic acting that makes the show even more funny. Not one episode within this show is bad, they are all really good and really funny and immensely enjoyable, with plenty of laughs, this show is great for watching at any time the mood suits.

Overall, 28 Episodes have aired over 3 Series (29 including the pilot episode). This is Barbara's 2nd series.

The episodes are:

Kids
Massage
Mum
Christening
Tyres
Fox
Sisters
Sheep
Mate
Wedding

Very much a watered-down version of One Foot in The Grave, Barbara is nonetheless hilarious. Series Two differs somewhat from Series One in that more of the complaining and outbursts are done by the supporting characters and not Barbara, with the main character played by Gwen Taylor being painted far more sympathetically. Buy it, for this price you get 2 discs. Easy fodder, and not as tight as One Foot in The Grave (which is a classic), but still laugh out loud kinda stuff.

British shows are big in the USA, too. I discovered Barbara on our PBS network years ago, and recently found I could order DVD's directly from Amazon.uk. This opened up a whole new world for me, as I love British shows, and only some of them make it to America's television. I have a region-free DVD player (why aren't they all?), so I can play these discs. I love British comedy, drama, and detective shows (I am on a quest to complete my Taggart series, I am only missing the "Classic Taggart 3 & 4", which is out of print.)
The Barbara series is a favorite, just good-natured humor that has me chuckling all through the program. The characters are portrayed well, and the writing keeps it fresh. Too bad there were only three seasons, but we take what we can get. I love Fawlty towers, and there were only about a dozen episodes of that, as I recall. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, Britain leads the way in broadcast entertainment, but I am also seeing some very good shows emerging from Canada, too.
I recommend Barbara to those who haven't yet seen it, it is genuinely funny and entertaining.
