Developed from a pilot screening in ITV's 1995 Comedy Firsts season, this acclaimed sitcom cast Gwen Taylor as Barbara Liversidge, a blunt-talking, heftily opinionated, advice-giving and occasionally ranting 52-year-old Yorkshirewoman. Sam Kelly (Porridge, 'Allo 'Allo) also stars as Ted, Barbara's cab-driver husband of 35 years and a man who has learned long ago to play second fiddle, while Sherrie Hewson (Coronation Street) is her nouveau-riche sister, Jean victim of many a withering look and practised put-down. Rob Brydon, Helen Atkinson-Wood and Zoe Lucker also appear in this first series, originally screened in 1999. Also included is the 1995 pilot episode.

The Barbara series is a favorite, just good-natured humor that has me chuckling all through the program. The characters are portrayed well, and the writing keeps it fresh. Too bad there were only three seasons, but we take what we can get. I love Fawlty towers, and there were only about a dozen episodes of that, as I recall. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, Britain leads the way in broadcast entertainment, but I am also seeing some very good shows emerging from Canada, too.
I recommend Barbara to those who haven't yet seen it, it is genuinely funny and entertaining.
The pilot is a waste of time so dont bother, but the rest of the shows are spot on - love Ted (Barbs husband) and his plod through life. Bring on series 2
Overall, 28 Episodes have aired over 3 Series (29 including the pilot episode). This is Barbara's first series and the pilot episode.
