W.C.Fields comedy about an accidental hero who stops a bank robber. Egbert Souse (W.C.Fields) is rewarded with a job as a bank guard when he accidentally foils a robber while sitting on a park bench. When he's offered shares in the 'can't fail' Beefsteak Mines, Souse persuades his daughters fiance, who happens to work for the bank, to let him 'borrow' some cash for his venture. Unfortunately, it's not long before the bank inspector arrives out of the blue, causing excessive hand-wringing all round.

The brilliant The Bank Dick. It's triumphantly shapeless as finally Fields was getting to make a film that he wanted and getting to go his own way. The film has an almost stream of consciousness plotline and as such is very modern and especially so in that the world he creates is barbed and antagonistic. There is nothing as good as this being made now though as greatness such as Fields has has been assimilated over time whereas Fields is the great original still leaving the viewer incredulous (with surprised awe) at how he approaches situations.

Fields' second film for Universal and generally considered one of his best. It carries the trademark of the hen-pecked husband with his awful family chosen from his usual repertory company of graceless uglies, but developed to a higher degree. Directed by long-standing friend/collaborator Eddie Cline, also Buster Keaton's director, it has a screenplay suggested by Mahatma Kane Jeeves (no prizes for guessing...) In it Fields plays Egbert Souse (pronounced Soo-zay, as his genteel family insist), the security guard of a bank, a job he gets after claiming to catch a robber who virtually falls into his lap. Though somewhat shapeless, it has pace, and an excellent car chase. Many regard it as his best film, but not to my mind.

Warning--This is a region 2 DVD which won't play on North American players

I haven't been able to play this DVD because it's a region 2 which is Europe and only "region free" DVD players or European ones can play region 2. North America is region 1. I don't think the product description made it clear that this was a region 2. I ended up choosing to buy the WC Fields Comedy Collection to get a playable version of "The Bank Dick," because it made more sense to me to spend $35 to get 5 movies as opposed to $20 to get a region 1 version of The Bank Dick (the Criterion Collection version). I'm pretty sure the seller would have taken it back had I tried, but at the point in time this happened I simply didn't have the time to do that. Am holding on to it in case I ever get a region free DVD player (which can be had for around $45).
