I am a fan of Stephen Leather's Dan Shepherd (SAS) books this is the first of his I have read which is in a different genre. At first it seemed like a simple story as it is written in the first person, but the more I read the more I liked it as the characters developed. It was not until after I had finished the book that I thought on reflection that it was a great read. I am now awaiting the next `Bob' book.

Have enjoyed Stephen's 'regular' thrillers for some years (more Spider please, Stephen, as soon as you like!) and stumbled across this by accident. Excellent entertainment, read it in one session, and left me wanting more! Felt like I was in Bangkok, stuck in a Mango queue!

I enjoyed Leather's early Private Dancer story and was eager to read about Bangkok Bob and his search for a young Mormon who was lost in the land of smiles. The story follows Leather's fast prose as he again takes us on a tour of Bangkok, it's underworld, a cast of thrilling characters and a host of "Thai" ethics. I enjoyed the story as I am quite familiar with Thailand and some scenes were particularly amusing. It is however not strong enough as a standalone thriller and perhaps a reason why it has not been released as a full fledged novel.

The fact that Stephen Leather lives in Bangkok for a lot of the time is illustrated in this book by his knowledge of the city. If you have been to Bangkok you will be aware of where the action takes place. If you haven't been, you will want to go.
Bangkok Bob is an endearing and humorous character and as the plot meanders the streets of the city you are dragged along with the action.
It is an excellent read and I highly recommend it as holiday reading.
