This is a story that has some seriously dark and disturbing storylines. Storylines, that are crucial to the plot. Sometimes when I read books with this type of subject matter, it feels empty and only vaguely touched on. However, E.K. Blair does a fantastic job of pulling all the horrifying details together and as hard as it is to read, it is also fantastic because it isn't sensationalised. It just is, what it is. Pure brutality.
As reasons behind the bigger picture came into play, and everything starts to come together, the book ends! So my advice is to make sure you have Echo available.
I am so glad I waited until now to read this series, because it was getting frustrating trying to find a book that I thought would, not I uphold my interest, but allow me to continue reading after I had finished the book.
A tale of revenge and plotting. A life gone wrong. Someone should pay. Nina seems to have everything, she is the beautiful trophy wife of a rich successful man. Only, things aren't always what they seem, she despises him.
EK Blair takes no prisoners; makes no excuses. This is a story that is meant to make your stomach roll in revulsion. It has to be done for you to appreciate the depravity that could prompt such desire for revenge.
"The heart is a weapon - a self inflicting weapon - that if not trained properly, can destroy a person."
"When you grow up like we have, in a world where there is no black and white, it's hard to clearly distinguish the grey, and right and wrong no longer exist."
I loved the slow unfurling of the plot. The pieces of the jigsaw coming together. Did I like Declan? Did I like Pike? Did I like Nina? Did I like Elizabeth?
No matter how my stomach rolled, I kept turning the pages eager for the denouement. And oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! I'm still reeling.
My favourite bits and pieces - whilst trying to remain spoiler free.
"The truest part of a person is always the ugliest. And with your evasiveness, I would bet that you're pretty damn ugly beneath all that gloss."
"And that's the moment when you realize that hopes and dreams are as f^<¥#d up as the fairy tales."
"I've always battled with the idea of hope. Hope had always failed me, but for some reason, I kept holding on to a tiny piece of it. I was scared to know what the world would be like if I didn't have it."
"I see it, a shooting star above, exploding into a million flittering pieces of diamond dust. Shimmering flecks trickling over me, and when I look down, I see them landing on Declan's golden chest. A splattering of crystals, each holding their own prism of sparkles as they glitter against his skin."
"Dreams. They're nothing but lies trying to trick me into believing life could really be like that." "Sounds more like a fairytale than a lie." "Fairytale is nothing but a fancy word for a lie used to deceive little kids." I tell him. "A false perception of reality used to give them hope in a hopeless world."
I am stunned. Is hope all gone? Book 2 for me...
I had this slight feeling of impending disappointment after the Carnegie bit near the end, which was so, so touching. It has to be read to be understood but by this point, I was hoping for some kind of quick resolution. It never came, but I wasn’t necessarily left feeling robbed. I realised that this book, Bang, was just too much of a mind mess for it to conclude within this volume. I kind of understood the need for this being a series because this book pulled no punches and wasn’t for the faint hearted. My little shattered heart possibly couldn’t have taken anymore!
There was one moment with Declan which other readers will also be aware of - and it was ick. Just, didn’t know where it came from. Somehow, it managed to be less ick than some of the other stuff but it was shocking, let me just say that. Nevertheless what happened between these two throughout the book was for me the most tragic part of the whole story and if the sequel was out already, I'd be reading it right now. I'd be tearing it up like there was no tomorrow.
I sampled some of the author's earlier work but it has nothing on this. Bang is in a totally different class. When I think about recommending this book to anyone I know, well, I just wouldn’t. It's not a book to be read but to be experienced with a completely open mind. I was brave and jumped into it, and I'm glad. This was so well-written and an exceptional example of self-publishing. Be warned as you enter this world though because you will have your heart torn out and ripped to shreds and you won't know who's good and who's bad. You won't know anything except that you were actually made to feel everything!
Not for me Mrs Blair.
