Product description
Product Description
This 10-part HBO television miniseries focuses on Easy Company, a group of American soldiers in World War II, tracking their experiences from the beginning of boot camp to the end of the war. Anchored by actors Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston, the series gives detailed attention to their experiences as a group, as well as the way that each of them develops individually. Based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's book of real-life accounts, Band of Brothers was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who worked together on Saving Private Ryan. Hanks also directed one episode, featuring his son, Colin Hanks.
From Amazon.co.uk
A genuinely epic achievement, the 10-part World War II drama Band of Brothers is a television series that makes big-screen Hollywood war movies look small in comparison. Based on the book by historian Stephen Ambrose, the series follows the US 101st Airborne Division's "Easy" E-Company from initial training through D-Day and across Holland, Belgium, Germany and Austria until the end of the war. Coproduced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the series take its initial inspiration from Saving Private Ryan and borrows that film's visceral visual approach to combat scenes using hand-held camerawork and de-saturated photography. But where Band of Brothers excels is in its scrupulous attention to the realities of military life (retired US Marine Captain Dale Dye, who also co-stars, is the man to credit).
After the high drama of the parachute drop on D-Day, Easy's greatest trial comes during the Battle of the Bulge, when they are besieged at Bastogne in the depths of winter. In one of the most harrowing and credible depictions of war ever committed to film we see the men enduring the repeated artillery attacks of the German forces and experience, if only vicariously, some of the sheer terror of the assault, while being humbled by the soldiers' courage and determination. Such feelings are enhanced by the series' masterstroke--bookend interviews with the surviving members of Easy Company, who talk with barely suppressed emotion of the experiences we see recreated. The endorsement of these veterans elevates Band of Brothers beyond any mere "war film"--its extraordinary achievement is that it shows the horror and savagery of war without gloss or jingoism, and yet celebrates the fraternal bonds and dogged heroism of the men who fought.
On the DVD:Band of Brothers arrives handsomely packaged in a six-disc box set with two episodes on each of the first five discs. Sound (Dolby 5.1) and picture (1.78:1 widescreen) only enhance the series' epic credentials. Disc 6 contains all the extras, the meatiest of which is the marvellous 80-minute documentary "We Stand Alone Together" about the real men of Easy Company. There's also a first-rate, genuinely interesting 30-minute "making of" feature about actor boot camp, visual effects and blowing up fake trees among many other things. This is complemented by actor Ron Livingston's revealing Video Diaries of boot camp. Additionally there's a "Who's Who" section and footage of the HBO premiere at Utah Beach, plus a TV spot for car company Jeep. --Mark Walker

The acting, screenplay and overall filming is simply excellent.
I think what separates this from just a great film set in WW2:
- it is based on true stories of the members of Easy Company;
- it follows them from joining up through to the war's end
- I especially enjoyed the "talking head" shots and reminiscences presented at the start of each episode,
- Towards the end of the last episode, the post-war life and careers of some of the key characters are summarised as a voice over. For me this really brought home the reality of what they had experienced together, and that this was fundamentally about real men and their lives.
I first bought the box-set around 2003, having heard about it from countless friends, but having never actually caught up with it myself. It was a revalation.
I have never been one for watching the same film more than once, with very few exceptions. Once you have seen it once, what more can you expect from it? A mere handful have persuaded me to revisit them. Shawshank, Green Mile and Alien to name a few. Band of Brothers is the exception, one that I must have seen at least half a dozen times and yet it was as good the last time as it was the first.
I won't spoil the story for you, so grab a few beers, make yourself comfortable and be prepared to join the 101st for a few hours.
HBO’s Band of Brothers is an entirely different kettle of fish. In this case we are priviledged to follow Easy Company, part of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, from the time they parachute into Normandy on June 5th 1944, (the day before D-Day) until the end of hostilities.
What makes this television drama so compelling is that some of Easy Company’s survivors, including Richard Winters, (played by Damian Lewis in the television drama) give us their personal recollections of each battle they fought. The overall impression of Major Richard. D. Winters is that he was not only respected, but also loved by his men. They gladly followed him throughout their time in the European Theatre of War.
The drama sticks to the facts, unlike most American Second World War depictions, sans the usual Hollywood flashbacks to loved ones, not to mention extremely annoying background music. Unlike Hollywood’s usual bulletproof clean cut all American hero leading his men into hell, Major Winters was a born leader who cared for his men, often mixing with them socially, whether back behind the lines, or sharing a fox hole with them.
I first saw this on television back in 2001. I’m glad I now own a copy of this truthful tale of ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances, and what they went through together in time of war. Were I asked to rate Band of Brothers, I would give it ten out of five stars!!! That’s how much I enjoyed it…
I'd always liked 'Saving Private Ryan', although it did have a fair amount of quiet scenes I didn't expect, but it was even better for them and when I heard that 'Band of Brothers' was created by the same people, I just had to see it, and it not only didn't disappoint, it blew me away.
From the little cameo's of guys who were actually there appearing at the beginning of each episode, to the whole way it's filmed using filters' that make it feel even more real, this is a must for anyone whose interested in World War II, or likes the war film genre.
This is the 4th time I've bought this series (all from different retailers over the years) and I'd buy it again if I had to. I bought this because a. It's on Blu Ray, b. It's in a gorgeous metal case and c. Because it's such a good price! I paid either £40 or £50 some years ago and that was for Dvd format in a book card holder with the fold out type of disc slots/clips.
If you want an in depth review of the series itself, there are plenty of professional writers who've reviewed it online.
I'll end by saying it's one of the best box sets I've ever seen, but I've always loved the war film genre, but sometimes while watching this, you not only love it, you live it. Fair play to those who've had to stand on any frontline in history.
