Sometimes, just sometimes it takes a simply action to catapult something straight out of the ball park and Ashley Pullo obviously did just that when she first determined how she wanted to portray the characters in this book, because starting at the end and working backwards was an absolute stroke of genius !

The story is beautifully told, richly descriptive and completely engaging.

Each chapter a chance to regress with Chloe and Adam, to the most pivotal points in their lives, the ones that brought them together and has given them the life that they have now.

Chloe is like a thousand women before her, talented, happy go lucky and determined to live her life to the full.

Life is what you make of the events that happen to you on your journey and with Chloe, I could have been reading a diary of any friend that I have, she was just that down to earth – I loved her.

Adam was Chloe’s strength and protector. His love for her was so complete it was beautiful to read. The man was everything that I would look for in a hero and to Chloe he most definitely was her hero. He loved her implicitly and without expectation. The connection between the two of them was just magnificent (oh and did I forget to say it was seriously hot!)

The Ballad will sing to you, it will carry along on its lilting tune and deposit you smiling and replete at the end.

This is a rare find, a book that is as honest as it is reverent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book with great characters! 10 Dec. 2014

The Ballad is original, smart, and yet completely basic. The story itself is simplistic tale of love and life, one that can be told (or read) again and again, but the clever writing will grab you from the first page. I'm a sucker for a strong, alpha male character, and Adam Ford delivers. Thrice.
Mixed with this incredible story of love is witty and fast-paced dialogue from the cast of characters of The Album. Ashley Pullo's style of writing is phenomenal, and one that leaves me thinking about the characters long after the final scene.
5.0 out of 5 stars Another delightful ensemble novel featuring the cool characters from The Album 25 Mar. 2015

What did you like best about The Ballad? What did you like least?
I really loved all the life observations and how they were linked to music and television shows that were popular when I was growing up. Adam's toast below is just one of many cool observations that season this wonderful ensemble novel.

"Sometimes life can make you pause without warning – a crossroad of choices, a brush of fate, or a dose of reality. But in the end, it’s simply a journey. And if we’re lucky, one to be shared with friends and family.” Adam

I did think it was a tiny bit weird when Nat played peeping Tom on her cousin Chloe and Adam when they shared a suite in Vegas. I was relieved when she quickly gave them their privacy.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Hell yeah!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I seriously laughed so hysterically that I had a coughing fit and a Facebook laughter sticker war with my live buddy reading partner, Beth Simkanin, when I read the below scene, one of many, many funny moments.

“You haven’t been Naughty Nat this enter trip. It’s like you’re avoiding sex – you wouldn’t even let me eat you out last night.”

“That’s not true! I’d f@#k you in the bathroom right now if I wasn’t wearing pants. It’s just that, well, my period can start at any minute – which explains all this hormonal behavior. Ugh, now you think I’m gross.”

“Nat, I watched our daughter bloom from your flower garden – nothing about you is gross.”

“Ew, that’s gross!”

Chris shakes his head and laughs. “And, I’m pretty certain you had your period two weeks ago.”

“You know my cycle? Creep.”

“I’m creepy because I can add?”

Which scene was your favorite?
Chloe's labor scene and her internal monologues leading up to it, during it, and after it were fantastic and so authentic sounding to me. So I guess I should say that my favorite chapter was the Sophie chapter detailing all of that from Chloe’s POV.

If you could take any character from The Ballad out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Adam would be an obvious choice, so I’m going with the not so obvious choice of Chris. Nat is a firecracker, and I was just impressed with how well he complimented her. He was her match in every way and a great 2nd love after the tragic death of Zach, who will always have a special place in my heart.

‘Chris kisses me, consuming my salting tears and breathing life into me, so much life I can actually see my future as clear as the present.’ Natalie

Author, Ashley Pullo is planning to write more with these characters, and I for one am more than a little excited at the prospect of hanging out with them again.
5.0 out of 5 stars The Ballad is like going to a reunion, but only seeing/spending time with your most favorite people! 26 Dec. 2014

The Album is one of BFF K's Bestie Reads for 2014! It is an incredible, wonderful, funny, heart-warming, tale of five friends written in the most unique style and format we've come across in a long time! I LOVED it!

So, I was thrilled with the recent release of The Ballad. This is a companion novel to The Album sharing stories and vignettes from the lives and loves of many of the same characters in The Album. The Ballad is like going to a reunion, but only seeing/spending time with your most favorite people! This book is an opportunity to slip back into their stories and get a deeper look at some of the most significant moments.

You'll be a guest at Chloe and Adam's wedding, have a ring-side-seat at the births of babies, experience career changes and even a Vegas vacation. In many cases, it expands on the epic narratives started in The Album or tells new ones that you'll love to read. The unique format and writing for The Ballad is one of the things I love most about the book. It's like getting little glimpses into the lives of the characters over several years and learning about their thoughts and all the things that make them tick. The characters are so well developed, parts are LOL-funny, there is lots of romance and a little steam. Through everything: cousins Chloe and Natalie are the heart of the story, their friendship is the very best love story told and music makes the memories! A 4.5 rated read on BFF Book Blog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Backwards or forwards, it's still one of my favs 28 Oct. 2015

It's a very different style from what I'm used to, but for me, it worked for this story. I felt like I was reading a REAL love story. It didn't have the over-the-top traumatic event, or that you-saw-it-a-mile-away plot twist. I don't want to say it was simple, but it took it back to the basics, which in a world of one-upmanship, is difficult to pull off well. It reminded me that love isn't always neat and there are honest struggles along the way. It's hard not to give five stars to a book that you constantly think of, and wish more people would take a chance on.
5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect follow up to The Album 9 Dec. 2014

I fell in love with Pullo's writing in The Album (which is a must read before The Ballad). My love affair with her characters continues in this book. I loved the reverse narrative and vignettes rather than a more typical chronological style of storytelling. The story of Natalie and Chloe is continued in glimpses and moments, much like we remember and tell our own stories. Some chapters are happy, while others tugged at my heart and brought me to tears. Reading this was like reminiscing with a group of favorite old friends. Retellings and memories begin with "remember that one time..." as life unfolds and keeps moving forward, carrying us along with highs, lows, laughter, love, and moments of sheer bliss. I highly recommend both these books.
