Product Description

Product Description

Joseph Arthur returns to Real World Records to release the double album, 'The Ballad of Boogie Christ Acts One and Two' - a new high point in his critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated career that has spanned nine full-length albums and 11 EP's. For every song Joseph Arthur has released, he's probably kept three others in the vault for safekeeping. Indeed, Arthur has been known to start working on a new album - or two - while simultaneously trying to finish another. It was amid this abundance of riches that the Brooklyn-by way of Ohio-native began molding a collection of music under a single narrative thread: 'The Ballad of Boogie Christ', is described by Arthur as "a fictionalized character loosely based on my own journey." Encompassing sessions put to tape in upstate New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Arthur's own Brooklyn studio, the 24-song double album showcases the artist's signature rich storytelling set to a diverse range of rock'n'roll. "The Ballad of Boogie Christ is unlike anything I've ever done before. It's a big production featuring horns and brass and living legends like Garth Hudson, Ben Harper, Jim Keltner, Joan Wasser and many others….It's a concept album with a story arc about a man falling apart and coming back together in insanity and enlightenment. It's a psychedelic soul record about redemption and what happens when you find it and lose it. It all came from words and poems like seeds that bloomed into songs which themselves fathered some of the richest music I've made in 17 years of putting together records. I can't wait for you to hear it. This is the one I've been waiting for years to put out." - Joseph Arthur.

Joseph Arthur back on top from. This is an example of a very, very rare beast: a double album that maintains a level of excellence throughout, rewarding the listener by getting better and better with each listen. A contender for Top Album of the year.

This is certainly an interesting album, but for me personally it never quite reaches the heights of say 'Our Shadows Will Remain' (which IMHO is a masterpiece!). There are certainly outstanding songs here - but there some that don't work for me to be honest. Still, love JA and this is still a very good album!

Bought this on a whim, sadly my whim was connected to my bank account and now I am slightly less well off. Have listened to it a few times, I guess it doing the opposite of growing on me. Not my cup of tea so really can't give a more balanced review sorry.

This is crammed full of great songs, brilliant hooks and poetic, it at times dark, lyrics. The Product Description blurb on Amazon is pretty much spot-on; this is his best work yet. I also saw him in concert in London recently and that too blew me away. I just don't understand why he is isn't massive. This guy is the real deal and this album is the best thing I've heard in years.

I have been a fan of Joseph Arthur for years and this is his stand out work to date despite a back catalogue of amazing songs. I simply cannot stop listening to this double album - buy it!

Possibly part biographical and certainly disturbing in parts. Joseph Arthur is a brilliant wordsmith and musician. The songs vary greatly from aggressive rock to contemplative folk/blues.
