Review

THE promotional hyperbole drummed up to launch this "battle" is actually justified by the explosive nature of the music which results. As Garth Cartwright puts it in his liner note, these two orchestras are the Duke Ellington and Count Basie of Balkan brass: both combine intense musicality with astonishing technique, and both dig deep into the Balkan blues. And the extraordinary thing is that, while growing up in Ceausescu's Romania and Tito's Yugoslavia, they knew nothing of one another... But what both bands purvey is the music which both the fascists and the communists tried so hard to stamp out: their music is what their distant ancestors would have played. Other influences have also come in from Hungarian dancehalls (Fanfare) and Turkish pop and folk music (Boban). Recorded in 48 hours, these tracks are rough stuff, but they radiate wonderful excitement. --MICHAEL CHURCH, The Scotsman, 31 May 2011

Two great bands meet for a battle till death and what ensues is a balkan party like no other. Every piece in this awesome album is excellent, but the two renditions of caravan show the depth and magnitude of the two bands. Two balkan renditions of a classic Duke Ellington composition and they sound entirely different! As for the James Bond and Gummy bear themes, I have yet to meet the person who can listen to them without bursting into laughter with a euphoric smile.

There's a bit of Afrobeat, a bit of marriachi and a bit of Black Dyke Mills brass band in there, mixed with disco. Excellent toe-tapping stuff.
