I don't see why many go on about this being a healthy alternative to sugar. Just like any kind of syrup, it is about 70% sugar. Its sweetness is from sugar and IS sugar, and tastewise, it is not that dissimilar to any other kind of syrup, a bit of caramelly smokiness to it, and that hint of coconut that you might not even notice unless you knew where it was from.
So, if you think this is healthy, stay well clear. If you realise it is a tiny tad less unhealthy than normal sugar, but not by much, and like the taste, by all means, do use this instead, but please use no more than you would normal refined sugar, and do not think it is a "healthy alternative". In fact, because they are marketed to be or rumoured to be thus, most sugar substitutes are far more dangerous than refined sugar that everyone knows to stay clear of.
It arrived very well packaged which is just as well as it's in a glass bottle as illustrated - looking like a small bottle of brandy. Its a very sweet and natural syrup which you can use in cooking and put in recipes in place of sugar. It smells great and pours smoothly and has a nice thick syrupy consistency.
I was a little disappointed it doesn't taste of coconut at all as I love coconut, however we loved it poured on vanilla ice cream and fruit and it's delicious poured over porridge too.
Great if you want a natural very sweet alternative to sugar which isn't as strong tasting as honey.
17 amino acids
10 minerals (including Potassium, Zinc, Iron)
Lower GI than honey, maple syrup or sugar
Higher Macro & Micro nutrients than honey or syrups
NO artificial sweetener, preservatives. Only natural occuring sugars
***Although I don't agree that anything can be as good for as honey (of course depending on the wuality of honey, not the cheap quality you get at the supermarket). Honey is a master healing food!
Also, 1% of this product is donated to orphanges, something I am passionate about.
The syrup came extremely well packaged in a 300g glass bottle with a metal screw cap, and it pours straight from the bottle. It’s quite a dark coloured syrup - darker than golden syrup, and is runnier than pouring golden syrup. I keep swigging it from the bottle to get the taste of it (as I live alone I can get away with doing this!). I’ve only got half a bottle left now, and I still can’t quite make my mind up about it. I don’t think it tastes as sweet as golden syrup, and it seems to leave an after-taste, that’s not unpleasant - but I think I’d prefer sugar cane syrup or maple syrup on pancakes. I’m now using this coconut syrup in fruit smoothies. I like it, but I think it’s very expensive, and I’m not sure that I’d buy it at the current Prime price, even though 10% of all profits from it is donated to the building of local orphanages, or on developing waste recycling, on the island of Bali.
I was invited to try this 300g bottle of Bali Nutra Coconut Syrup free in return for an honest, unbiased opinion of it. I hope my thoughts and experience will help potential purchasers to make an informed decision about a product they are considering buying.Read more ›
I don't recommend it in hot drinks. I tried it in coffee and the flavour was completely lost. I had to put a lot in to get enough sweetness and it tasted no better than adding sugar. It works well on pancakes and waffles where it adds good flavour without too much sweetness. I would expect it to work well in any recipes that call for honey or maple syrup.
The bottle won't go far if you use it for baking. I haven't tried it but the rich flavour may work well. I would love to receive comments from anyone who tries it.
I noticed some people describe it as tasting of coconut. I think this is the power of suggestion. it comes from the sap not the fruit and I don't believe there is the slightest hint of coconut in the flavour.
I was given this product free for review. I write objective reviews, not advertisements. There are many instances where I have pointed out important problems with products that have been highly rated.
