Very rarely can a book totally take you in within the first couple of pages..this one can!- and I am a big reader.. The author is a natural and engrossing storyteller. The fabulous narrative and dialect takes you back in time to 1950s rural Ireland and you can really feel the emotions, life and reality of the time. Very cleverly intertwined from present day to a recount of the main character's fall from grace and addiction. This is a MUST read for anyone who loves an absorbing good story, with fabulous characters, history and an underlying lesson in handling life! I can promise you you won't want to put this down!

I'm not a great reader, but had the opportunity recently whilst on a short break away without disruptions.

I read it in 3 days (a record for me!!) as once started I just couldn't resist picking it up again to continue the story of Milo's life. It's not an overcomplicated story and easy to follow and it moves nicely between the past as a young boy and much more recent events. I found I could relate to much of the story/detail which helps of course, but having said it makes for a great read and would recommend accordingly.

Congratulations on your debut book and hope to see volume 2 in the near future.

My God Peter! They say everyone has a book in them, and you certainly proved that.
What a fantastic story, and so well written. Today's kids will never understand the struggle of growing up in 1950's Ireland, where money was tight, but where families were even tighter. Where bitterness destroyed people, but lifelong friendships also developed.
Milo was from such a family. Struggling to make ends meet, and nervous of going against the church, and it's hierachy. He developed a strong friendship with Charley, who was a couple of years his senior, and who, I thought was a little philosophical at times for his age, but did his best to keep Milo on the straight and narrow.
The book also makes us aware of how early in life the demons can get hold of us, and we have to spend our entire life fighting them. Luckily Milo was strong enough to overcome his demons, which is never easy, and grew up to marry and have a wonderful family.
I can't wait for the next instalment of this trilogy. I hope we hear if Milo stayed in contact with his childhood friends, especially Cha and little Tim.

An interesting insight in how your past influences your future, but that it is your own character and inner strength who defines who you are. The book is split between the tough and at times brutal1950's Ireland and the main characters more recent personal struggles after emigration to find a better life.

Free flowing and engrossing narrative draws you in to this thought provoking read.

Right from the start you are drawn in and have empathy for the characters. A book that is part gritty drama and yet heart warming as you are transported back in time to another world where innocent youth merges quickly into the harsh reality of adult life with all the painful lessons this brings . A true 'coming of age' tale and a tale which has many hidden lessons for all who read it. At times humorous, at times painful, the reality of life in tough times is perfectly described, and friendship shines brightly all the way through......a great read!

Peter, I have read your book as you had told me you had been busy writing! Written with passion and fond memories of your childhood and family, some of whom I I have met. Now I know why you used to drink pints of Orange squash in the pub! Thoroughly enjoyed your first book and your funny wit with regards to battles with idiots making fun of an illness. Only praise for opening up to others the battle of giving up the ole sauce. Well done

A fascinating book in which P.C Delaney takes you on a walk through a time of great hardship, poverty, innocence and much sadness. But amidst all of this cheerfulness keeps shining through.A book in which the author describes Milo,s demons and fears to his appreciation of the simple happy and contented life that he has today. From the idealic settings of rural Ireland and the aftermath of the civil war this is a compelling story through one Man,s life.

This is wonderfully written, gripped me from start to finish. Graphic descriptions of the housing, poverty, influence of the church in 50's Ireland, characters and beautiful countryside illustrate perfectly the era in which Milo grew up. This is intertwined with present day narrative of his recovery from alcoholism and the inner turmoil encountered on a daily basis to conquer his inner demons. Superb book and as other reviewers I can't wait for book 2. X
