My son laughed for hours reading this children's novel. Mr Duncan really understands how children's imaginations work and takes their minds on a thrilling adventure ride.
I will recommend this book to my friends and look forward to further publications.

The thing about the very best writing (for adults or children) is that it can be deceptively simple. That's what makes it so easy and enjoyable to read, and so apparently easy to do. Of course, it is not. I and another million or so authors know this. Whatever it is, this man has it. His style blends the comic invention and application of Tom Holt, via Lear, Lewis Carrol and Stephen Leacock. But enough of the technical stuff. This book is quite simply brilliant, and I am very, very jealous.

The delicious achievement of this book is that it meets that often guilt-propelled obligation to read a bedtime story to your child, whilst totally taking away all of the labour-intensive boredom that can accompany the task. This book was probably written as much for the delight of the parent as it was the entertainment of the child. It is Andy Stanton, but better. Andy Duncan has managed to create a book that will capture a child's full enjoyment (what child wouldn't like to hear of silly knights with cool hairdo's, aliens with amazing jam snot and wizard's with excessive back hair), whilst simultaneously providing the grown up in the room with a deliciously nostalgic and contemporary "nod" to modern culture in a thoroughly witty way. Our world of technology and soap operas, the 'pop star', the fad and the fashion is all lightly mocked. The humor is always gentle, yet sharp. Clever throughout. You will not be bored! You will often be delighted. As mother to a girl who has also experienced bullying, I think the book has something to celebrate deeply: the bullies are dealt with in the most satisfying way, without cruel retaliation, but wit (and perhaps a mention of a historic wedgie). A wonderful debut. When is the next coming out?

I love a good tale, and this one is told with wit, warmth and humour. Aimed at (I believe) 7-12 year olds, this story could easily be enjoyed by everyone. Within the story there is a lot of humourous detail to savour and plenty of jokes and cultural references to make you smile. Like all good children's books, there are life lessons to be learned along the way (bullying and selfishness will get you nowhere, kids!), magic and mystery and a good dose of silliness.
The characters are endearingly human (even when they aren't human) and lovingly described. Each character is brought to life with glee, which makes the story even more engaging. I'm very pleased I found this story and I look forward to future books by the author.
