The basic plot of 'Bad News Bears' revolves around a group of young misfit boys on a losing little league baseball team who get an alcoholic coach who eventually cleans up their act, and his own.
Anyone who loved the1976 Michael Ritchie original will watch this remake with horror. For every new ingredient added to the film, (a kid in a wheelchair, Hooters waitresses on the sidelines, and a skate band musical interlude), there's a classic sequence dropped, funny lines omitted, mixed with a cast of uncharismatic child actors.
Billy Bob Thornton is a terrific substitute for the original films coach played by Walter Matthau, but the trouble is that the film relies too heavily on Thornton's character to carry the film. It totally misses the point of what made the original so good which was that is was about a group of misfits coming together, not just focusing on one individual character.
Overall this is a film that lacks the characters, the story, and the laughs of the original. If you're a Billy Bob Thornton fan then obviously you'll want to see this film, but if you're not, get the 1976 version and enjoy the original for what it is.

This has to be one of the most under rated movies in recent years. My kids (10 & 13 yr old girls) adore it. We must have watched it 25 times.

It ticks all the right boxes. Sure its not incredibly deep and meaningful but it does measure up against just about any other film of its type.

Get this film. You wil not regret it.

You know, sometimes a low expectation of something can really give you a pleasant surprise. This Richard Linklater remake of a great 1976 Walter Matthau movie isn't close to being brilliant or remotely fresh. In fact the term "if it ain't broke then why fix it" springs to mind, because an update wasn't needed at all. But to me, and a few other hardy {foolhardy} souls, this Bad News Bears is immensely funny and far from hindered by its predictability {Linklater and his team stick rigidly to the original film}. And while nobody, and I mean nobody, can do sarcasm and hang-dawg like Matthau, Billy Bob Thornton is no bad substitute to have coming off the bench. His delivery of some truly priceless lines alone make the film worth watching. That he is at ease with the array of child actors on show also eases the film thru its sticky {potentially sickly} moments.

In a sports based genre that is full of like for like pictures, The Bad News Bears original is still one of its acerbic highlights. This remake does fall well short in the class department, but on a gags to laughs ratio? It nicely hits the ball out of the park.

5.5/10 to many weary observers, 7.5/10 for me and the rest of the Morris Buttermilk appreciation society.

1st of, i havent seen the original and i dont think i ever will. this film isnt half as bad as people make it out to be and yeah ok yeah im sure the original was good but im not here to talk about that.

billy bob plays an exterminator who really looks like he couldnt care less about life and always seems to say whatever he feels. to me its this reason that makes the film enjoyable to watch. sure he does kind of play the same in bad santa, mr woodcock etc. but in this it seems to work.

if you are easily offended, then sure this movie might not be for you, but at the end of the day, this isnt a film to be taken seriously and is highly entertaining. dont let the nostalgic critics put you off which is another feel good comedy, that simply represents the world today.
