This book is not for the seasoned punter, familiar with all the technical jargon, with a range of betting systems and many years' experience. It has no pretensions to cater for that market. What it is, is an impressive introduction to betting on race horses at the course, in the betting shop and via all the new means that have opened over more recent years. The writing is wonderfully clear and the presentation balanced and impartial, with throughout a genuine attempt to help the smaller and newer punter gain the best possible value for his/her money.

There is most useful guidance: as to which races are the riskier investments, which offer the better returns, the importance of bookies' strategies, explanation of frequently used jargon: "steamers", "jollies", "bumpers" etc. and some less familiar features that even seasoned betting shop punters overlook. There is also a ready reckoner included to assist in calculating our outlay and winnings. In all, this is a really splendid little book, which crams an enormous amount of valuable information in the most engaging way. While it cannot, nor pretends to, point us to winning a fortune, it makes us a great deal more aware of all the factors that are brought into play when we invest our hard-earned on a horse. Within the scope of her brief, Belinda Levez, has done a first rate job.

As the author of "Picking Big Priced Winners" I tend to look out for any new books on racing.I "read" ie skimmed through this book in a bookshop.I am sure that it would be helpful to someone who had just started to develop an interest in betting on horses. However there is little to be gained by the seasoned racegoer ( or those who frequent the bookmakers or bet online.)This kind of advice is available in any number of "How To" books on racing and I would have liked to see a more original approach to selecting winners.
