How can I have missed this recording? I am greedy for Bach Passions and have fifteen recordings of the Saint John. I guess I have been lured away by the HIP crowd. Now I am inclined to like those recordings - I think the clarity of the writing is often heard in a very distinct way, rather like the way one hears the lines in Wendy Carlos' Moog versions of Bach - but they generally appeal to the head rather than the heart. I'm not overwhelmed by them. This performance from the 'age of the dinosaurs' is visceral and passionate.
It would rate five stars just for Wunderlich as Evangelist. I dare say there are critics who might waste time dreaming of what he might have achieved with this music with a maturity denied through his early death. No need. He is magnificent and no other Evangelist has his beauty of voice. The diction of all soloists and chorus is exemplary. The text is truly articulated.
DFD tends to get a bad press these days - but surely for the recordings made when past his prime. I only heard him once live - Brahms Requiem in the Royal Albert Hall when he was about 60. In that venue he impressed me hugely. Here he is in his prime and I find him magnificent.
Grummer is lovely (so unlike all those Minnie Mouse sopranos who grace recordings of the past thirty years - all top and no bottom, so to speak) Ludwig sounds like a true contralto. All are strong, dedicated performers. Traxel is new to me as tenor soloist. In a way, he exemplifies what distinguishes this performance as a whole from the HIP crowd. Passion. It is not always lovely but it is tremendously involved singing, suggesting at times the intensity of Vickers. And of course it is so much 'bigger' as a voice in this music than we have become used to. As are all the forces here. Great chorus, full bodied and totally involved. However, there is considerable delicacy and intimacy also in this performance - there is a true chamber music feel to the solos.
Ultimately, the bottom line is this - this is a deeply spiritual performance. And that, I find, is all too rare in a world of Bach performance which tends to be intellectual and bloodless. Highest possible recommendation.
