Whilst this recording of Beethoven's 'Missa Solemnis' still stands as amongst the best available versions, the Bach and Handel works may be perceived as too heavy and slow by modern audiences, who are used to the smaller scale, more 'authentic', performances which are favoured now. Although they take a bit of getting used to at first, it's well worth persevering with these recordings, because they are 'of their period' and remain fine performances, particularly when compared to other versions available at the time of their original release. Playing and singing are first rate, as are the excellent Kingsway Hall recordings, the set only narrowly missing 5 star status for the reasons highlighted above.

The Missa Solemnis and the Matthew Passion are self recommending (if the latter was good enough for Richter, I'm not going to argue); I had also forgotten the sheer clarity of the diction in Messiah; and the b minor mass now seems less of a paradox than it once did, with it's chamber forces and steady tempi style becoming increasing the norm in 'post modernist/post revisionist' times.

HASH(0x959c5b2c) out of 5 stars This Matthew Passion... 30 Dec. 2013
By ColtSharon89 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I give this box set a five star rating for two reasons, the first being for the exemplary recording of the Matthew Passion (which will be my primary focus in the following review) which is included inside. The second, it should go without saying, is because it is Klemperer.

I initially honed in on this set for this specific recording of the Matthew Passion which, for me, trying to find by itself has been a royal pain. After reviewing my options, I settled on this set for the additional recordings offered inside. I am an avid collector of Bach's sacred works and all of Beethoven's work in general so this promised to be quite a great purchase all across the board.

This Matthew Passion is one of the most perfect I have yet to hear. This particular one is the fourth in my own collection (the others are from Gardiner, Richter and Karajan) and, out of all of them, I have yet to feel the gravity of the piece that Klemperer has been able to bring out in spades. Maybe it is Klemperer's own tortured background that allows the music to swell with passion and gravitas. There are issues that Klemperer dealt with throughout his life that the other aforementioned gentlemen never had to even consider while making their own recordings. As one listens to the piece, one can feel a longing for redemption, comfort and solace. It becomes clear that Klemperer conducted a Passion that he not only would have wanted to hear, but possibly needed to hear.

performances. One truly legendary effort, barely equaled but not eclipsed, is the Beethoven Missa Solemnis. Soloists gave career
psformances, especially Waldemar Kmenntt and Marga Hoffgen- both surprised in re vocal attractiveness and exprssive intensity.
Perhaps the primarily ensemble nature of the vocal work helped, but no soloist earns less than five starts, and both Soderstrom

and Crass are major assets. Klemperer encounters no tempi problems, while his customarily extreme clarity allows one
to grasp this difficult colossus with more ease and appreciation than in most other interpretations.
Messiah also posseses clarity and grandeur. Hines and Hoffman, I think are attractive soloists. Schwarzkopf was caught a bit
too late c.f, Donath, Ameling, and Heather Harper. Klemperer again captures the grandeur and epic nature of the score. I do find some tempi too slow, which is at least problematic in the two Bach works. Neither is as static as Klemperer's very late Cosi
Fan Tutte, but both require a quicker pace fairly often. Of the soloists, I warm most to Baker, Prey, and Crass in the
B Minor Mass .Fischer Dieskau, Ludwig, Berry, and Pears in the St Matthew Passion. Schwarzkopf is better here than in Messiah

After several years of hearing these works with "authentic instruments" and correct musical interpretation, I decided to re-hear these beautiful compositions by musicians and conductors from the past. I love the full sound of modern instruments and the seasoned interpretations by the masters, of whom Otto Klemperer is one of the best.
