This album contains some of the best Bach performances of recent years.
The first two CDs contain a complete recording of Bach's four "Lutheran" Masses. These readings now face stiff competition from the Purcell Quartet's vibrant one-per-part renditions on Chandos, and from Richard Hickox's 1970s recordings on Decca (I have yet to hear the latter, but familiarity with Hickox's later recordings suggests that they would be more incisive and dramatic than Herreweghe's). The performances in this album, however, are still among the very best. Herreweghe's conducting is restrained, yet profoundly lyrical and moving; his orchestra and choir produce a warm, beautiful sonorities and he has gathered a superb team of soloists.
The two cantata CDs are likewise excellent. They present some of Bach's most profound music, from his early setting of Psalm 130 (Cantata 131) to some of the great chorale cantatas of his Leipzig years.
Together, these four CDs present some of Bach's greatest (and, for the most part, lesser-known) masterpieces, in performances of great beauty and refinement - not very dramatic, perhaps, yet highly expressive. Not to be missed by any Bach lover!

As the other reviewer points out, the style of direction is un-dramatic, without big contrasts, restraining musical expression; this way of interpreting is so typical of period-instrument ensembles, being N. Harnoncourt the big exception. Supporters of this conducting style argue that the music sorts itself out of the players/singers, so to say, being their participation in the process secondary. I believe, on the contrary, that interpreters do recreate the music, which is itself totally dependent on the interpreters' and conductors' musical personality.
This performance for all its warmth and technical perfection comes across as flat, understating Bach's dramatic potential.
Its main competitor is M.Corboz's reading for Erato, now repackaged by Warner in its Apex series (Missae Breves, Etc Bwv 233 - 242
Unfortunately Corboz didn't work with the Gulbenkian choir and orchestra on that occasion, which surely would have improved the value of the set. Harnoncourt apparently didn't record the 'small' masses with Concentus Musicus/A. Schoenberg choir, which is odd considering their devotion to Bach.
Then there is the Newton set under P. Schreier and great soloists, on which I cannot comment (Bach, J.S. Magnificat/Missae brevis I frankly would love to own this one.
