What about this version with the Akademie fur Alte Musik? I think you know what to expect once you hear the first movement of Brandenburg Concerto no.1 and in this case, there is so much joy at just the right tempo, what follows with the rest of this wonderful bargain set, is exactly the same throughout and this is now my top choice :-)
Those recordings took me back to this and I have to say it is excellent.

This recording of the Brandenburg Concertos by the Altemusik Akademie though is exactly what I look for in a HIP performance. There is not only the expected conformance to period practice but also a thoughtful attention to shaping of phrases and overall effect. Each concerto has been freshly thought out with great care to the lilt and balance of melodic phrases. Listen to the samples provided. Be aware that they perform only the original movements of the Concerto #1 though. Pacing is kept active never dragging but just as important never frenetic. The recording is well balanced. One of my essential recordings of the Brandenburg Concertos. I also like the one by Linde and the earlier modified period performance by the Collegium Aureum. Avoid the US issue of the latter recording though. It is much inferior to the German.
