Baby Love was first published in Australia in 1994 and since then I have done 6 editions and many revisions. The last edition was in 2013.
I was persuaded to do a US edition in 2001 a decision I now regret as my US publishers, Rowman & Littlefield, will not agree to publishing a new edition but nor will they let it die. It seems it ticks along enough for them to keep reprinting it. I am aware that parents buy this US edition without realising what they are buying as it is not made clear that this is an out-of-date US publication.
This is extremely frustrating for me and I advise all potential purchasers of my books to look for the Australian 2013 print book edition of Baby Love, published by Pan Macmillan, Australia or the 2014 e-edition published by Xoum, Australia. (less)
At no stage does Robin Barker TELL you what to do instead, she provides a number of options. She is a very experienced in the field of children and this comes through very clearly in the book.
Now it is time for me to buy the Toddler version...
Robin Barker writes without judgement but with great advice, empathy and experience and never once tells you what to do, only how to understand things from baby's point of view. She guides you in making the right decision for both baby and yourself and often gives you many ways of looking at a situation, therefore giving you multiple options of action, helpng you to make the right choice for baby and for you at that point in time. This book not only tackles how to care for your new baby but also how to care for yourself as a new mum, something which no one had advised me on and something that my NCT antenatal classes didn't either.
I highly recommend this book as the only one you will ever need to help you through that wonderful but tiring and emotonal and often bizarre first year of having a new baby in your life. If I ever have number two I will definitely re-read this fabulous book!
