I ordered this original 1987 CD, despite owning the Rhino remaster contained in the 11 disc boxed set 'Integrale Des Albums Studio', and also the 2004 'Evidemment' 3 disc boxed set which has all but two of the songs, plus another recording from the sessions 'La Seule Chose Qui Comte'. Perhaps this was excessive, but I wanted to hear the sound of the original, as well as having a 'stand alone' CD. Disappointingly, when 'Babacar' arrived, the case contained the wrong CD. As the (second hand) price was low, I did not pursue a replacement.

Having reviewed all of the above, and being unable to compare the original '87 ADD CD, I guess it was a challenge to 'review my purchase' and find something new to say about the album.

'Babacar', with 'paroles et musique' by Michel Berger has a synthetic 80's production to match the previous France Gall album 'Debranche' (1984) and Michel Berger's 1985 'Differences' long-player. Certainly, the sound is very different for fans of the 60's Philips recordings.

The best known song (outside the UK) is probably 'Ella, Elle L'A (4:50), about the US singer Ella Fitzgerald, who had hits in the UK between 1958 & 1964. 'Papillon De Nuit' appears to be about Moths ! ('Butterfly of Night'). An illustration of the latter is shown next to the lyrics (I do at least have the CD booklet! ). The ballad 'Dancing Brave' (sung in French) has a photo of a racing horse next to the lyrics.

The album contains 9 quality tracks, and is a mix of ballads and uptempo songs with the ubiquitous 1980's synthetic drum sound. A clunky rhythm sound is noticeable on the tracks 'La Chanson D'Azima' & 'Urgent D'Attendre'.

This is the only record that I have from France Gall, but it is good enough for me to discover that you do not have to speak French to understand her songs, because with her beautiful voice you got it all. Just imagine, it took me like 10 years to find the C.D., because the first time that I listen to Babacar, was when a friend of mine went to Europe and bought the cassette, I was amazed. But I lived in Mexico in those days, and there, it was almost impossible to find, and then here in the Unites States is were I bought it, but the wait worth it, because when I listen to the songs, I can only hear such a marvelous voice, excellent rhythms, from romantic ballads to dancing rhythms that give you a lot of different feelings. I highly recommend this record because France Gall is a real artist that puts a lot of feeling in her songs and you can feel it. I would love to have the latest record from France Gall and know more about her.

Although not her best by a long chalk, compared to others across the globe worth four stars.
Very bouncy and quite poppy from someone who has tried to emulate Johnny Hallyday (or the UK's Cliff Richard) in longevity. She debuted in 1967.
Other albums have been better but this is probably more of one that appealed to the international audience.
Thematically there is a green side to this.
I would reccomend it if only because it is available rather than because it is her best - it is not. Try Au Zenith, a couple of years earlier, for instance.

HASH(0x8fa923f0) out of 5 stars France's Pop Queen Comes Of Age 16 Jun. 1999
By Soonerson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Discovered this album while in Paris for the '87 French Open tennis championships. Instantly fell in love with the title track and quickly developed a keen liking for the rest of the album. Gall was a bubbly pop sensation in France in the '60's and '70's, so her longevity itself is impressive. This album, produced with her husband, Michel Berger, takes her music "of age" and gives up on her "happy" sound for a much more adult-focused musical product. Hear the ache in her voice on "Ella, Elle L'a", and let your imagination take you to late night along the Seine with "C'est Bon Que Tu Sois La". Even if you can't understand a word of French--like me--you'll enjoy Gall's unique voice and Berger's fine arrangements.

HASH(0x8fa92444) out of 5 stars FRANCE's LAST SOLO ALBUM WITH MICHEL BERGER 18 Oct. 2000

For FRANCE GALL and her fans, that album will remain special, because it was to be the last with her husband that was entirely conceived for her(the 1992 songs were duets). It is also linked with their trips to SENEGAL(BABACAR was a child they supported)and also very personnal(EVIDEMMENT was written in the memory of DANIEL BELAVOINE who was their best friend)FRANCE has always admired ELLA FITZGERALD, and the song ELLA is her tribute. The record was her biggest seller ever in EUROPE and almost all the songs were hits.

This purchase was to replace a missing album lost in a move. It is that good, probably her best in my opinion. Her voice and range as well as her subject matter bring her music alive.

Poppy and emotional, yet mature enough to convince. Maybe the song Babacar itself is melodramatic, but the singing on this album is so clear and charming I just have to like it.
