So I thought I would share my experience, as this information may be of interest to potential buyers.
(Extender 1200: with - BT Home Hub5 – Amazon Fire Stick – Samsung Mobile – Apple i-pod – Apple i-phone)
I purchased the BT Duel-Band Wi-Fi Extender 1200 as I get a very weak Wi-Fi signal in the upstairs back bedroom of my house. This is my sons bedroom and full of Wi-Fi tech, which is prone to signal loss when he is streaming media – especially when streaming HD content.
I run a BT Home Hub 5 - which has been great and has at-least 12 Wi-Fi devices connected to it at any-one-time.
The Extender 1200 comes with a WPS button so I thought this would make connection easy – but I failed to get the Hub/Router to see it after several attempts.
Luckily, there is an alternative connection method ‘Method 2’ in the instruction sheet that comes with the Extender 1200.
Method 2 allows you to manually access the Extender 1200 and select your Hub/Router manually via a Laptop or PC – by using either a Wireless connection or an Ethernet cable, which thoughtfully is included with the Extender 1200.
I decided to connect using the Ethernet cable, as connecting Wirelessly meant having to disconnect and re-set the Hub/Router password on my laptop which I didn’t really want to do as I have it set to auto connect.
The Extender 1200 has a switch on the top for selecting the ‘Band’ either 2.4GHz better range or 5GHz better faster performance.
The switch is set to 2.4GHz by default and has a sticker over the switch saying:
“keep it in the default / set-up position until set-up is complete” – So I did this.
The Extender 1200 found my Hub/Router and I followed the laptop on-screen instructions and set up was complete – all quite straight forward.
Once the Extender 1200 was working it has ‘Red’ range lights to inform you if it is positioned ‘Too Close’ or ‘Too Far’ away from the Hub/Router – with a ‘Blue’ ‘Good Range’ light for optimum positioning.
With the Extender 1200 set to 2.4GHz my upstairs landing was ‘Too Close’ ‘Red’ so I positioned it in my sons bedroom where before I had a weak signal and the ‘Blue’ ‘Good Range’ light came on.
As my son runs an Amazon Fire Stick in his room I thought this would be a good test of the Extender 1200. I changed the setting on the Fire Stick to the Extender 1200 –which it found quite happily and was the same as my Hub/Router name but with ‘EXT2’ or ‘EXT5’ in-front. (EXT2 being 2.4GHz and EXT5 being 5Ghz)
The signal strength for both was very good so I decided to set the Fire Stick to EXT2 as the Extender 1200 was in the default 2.4GHz switch position.
The Fire Stick connected and all appeared to be good until I tried to stream video – at which point the Fire Stick lost connection – but when I stopped streaming video it reconnected. This happened every time I tried to stream video. So I tried connecting to the EXT5 and this was worse.
I then tried connecting my mobile phone – which is a Samsung Galaxy S5 – again this found the Extender 1200 and I was able to connect without any problem – But again would lose connection when streaming media on my phone whether connected to EXT2 or EXT5.
I therefore decided to try the Extender 1200 with its switch set to 5GHz mode – thinking I could just flick the switch over – but the Extender 1200 then couldn’t find my Hub/Router.
I re-examined the instructions and found that to use the Extender 1200 in the 5GHz mode you have to repeat the whole set-up process AGAIN via ‘Method 2’ ONLY – either Wirelessly or via Ethernet cable – This is NOT made very clear when you first set-up the Extender 1200
So I repeated the set-up process for 5GHz mode and the Extender 1200 worked happily with my Hub/Router again.
The position for the Extender 1200 from the Hub/Router in the 5GHz mode is obviously less than in the 2.4GHz mode – so this time the Extender 1200 needed to be positioned on my landing for the ‘Blue’ ‘Good Range’ light to come on.
I then tried connecting the Fire Stick to the Extender 1200 via the EXT2 setting and SUCCESS it streamed HD VIDEO PERFECTLY– I tried this on my Samsung phone and that worked also. As did a Samsung Galaxy Tab, Apple ipod and Apple iphone.
So to some up: –
I worked out that there was too much wireless congestion with the Extender 1200 set in 2.4GHz mode, as a lot of my devices around the home were using 2.4GHz – by setting the Extender 1200 to 5GHz mode it was able to process the wireless data faster and with less congestion.
My Set up now: –
Extender 1200 – set to 5Ghz
Devises – connected via EXT2 to the extender.
