Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

It is a good idea to check prices with BT before ordering equipment elsewhere. I got my first home hub 6 for £9.99 delivery charge when I upgraded to BT Infinity.
BT sent the new hub in good time and asked me to set it up the day before BT Infinity was due to be activated so that they could check the hub was working.
All I had to do was unpack the box and connect the hub up. I connected the hub to power with the adapter that was supplied. Also to the BT master socket via the Broadband port with a grey ended cable that was NOT supplied! Fortunately, I had the necessary cable from a previous BT hub.
Then I just powered up the hub and waited for the lights to change via stages to a solid blue.
At that point, I just connected my laptop and printer using the old-fashioned method with the hub key code. The printer settled on the 2.4 GHz channel and the laptop on the 5.00 GHz channel. Since everything worked fine I saw no need to meddle.
The next day the hub went through all the colours again whilst BT switched on Infinity. After about half an hour the connection settled to a fairly constant 64mb, where by and large it has stayed ever since.
There has been the odd glitch; the connection did go very slow for one session. On a couple of times the hub has restarted during a session but I've never had a hub that didn't do this occasionally. But for this I would have given it 5 stars, it is certainly worth 4 stars.
My heart goes out to everyone who has had issues with this product. If anything changes I will let you know. I'm currently on firmware version SG4B1000B540 which was updated on 18/05/18. I now believe the hub may have been upgrading its firmware on the occasions it restarted.
Also I've noticed that the Hub occasionally gets kicked off the 5GHz channel and reconnects on the 2.4GHz channel. The 5 GHz channel tends to be faster but can be less reliable.
I've purchased a second hub 6 via Amazon to keep as a spare. This is my major gripe; the amount of equipment that comes with the hub differs from box to box.
With the hub from BT I got the power adaptor, the extra key code sticker, and a bag to recycle my old hub. That was it.
With the hub from Amazon I got the power adaptor, the extra key code sticker, a yellow ended Ethernet cable that I know how to use, and a red ended Ethernet cable I don't know how to use.
Crucially neither set contained filters or the grey ended broadband cable for connecting the hub to the BT master socket via the Broadband port. Anybody receiving these two kits who had never had a hub before would have been left up a certain creek without a paddle!
My Amazon seller is hopefully going to help me out and send me any missing items separately. Some sellers are more helpful than others, and here's the rub: Amazon is known to take hubs from one supplier to fulfil orders from another, so nobody can be quite sure what is in the box.
Perhaps it's about time Trading Standards sunk its teeth into Amazon!
Pros:
- The range is a lot better than my old Airport Extreme. I have a large garden and the Airport Extreme covered half, whereas the Smart Hub gives me full coverage. This was a surprise.
- The speed is also good on my ADSL2 line. My upload speed has doubled, my download speed has increased slightly and has become a lot more consistent, and my latency has halved. Again another surprise.
- The Smart Hub itself is more neutral looking than many of the current crop of routers - important when in my case it is prominently on show in the living room!
Cons:
- The first Smart Hub I received experienced drops out in connecting to BT Broadband. I sent it back and bought a replacement direct from BT. So far I haven't seen any dropouts with the replacement box.
- My Apple devices at times struggle to move between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. On the first box this could lead iPhones and iPad unable to connect to wifi without a reboot but I haven't seen that on the replacement box. I've (for now) separated the bands so that I can manually make sure they are connect to the 5GHz band.
- No option to set up a guest network, which I would expect on even the most basic router these days.
- Some of the more advanced features such as beam forming and MIMO are not on right now.
So overall the Smart Box has been a pleasant surprise. If you are a BT Broadband customer it may be worth a go and I would certainly try it out before dismissing it. It does certainly feel a cut above your average ISP router and speed and range have been way beyond what I expected.
UPDATE: Since posting this review, I’ve tried modem/routers from Netgear and TP-Link. Both had individual issues and have been returned, but as a point of comparison the SmartHub’s range and speed were equivalent to both routers. The only difference I saw was fastest switching between 5 and 2.4 bands compared to the Smart Hub but hopefully when BT turns beam forming back on again that will improve. My second Smart Hub is proving very reliable, so my advice is if you get one that is problematic is to insist on a replacement.
The code on the outside of the packaging was also different from that on the inner box.
I do not mind purchasing open box items at a discount provided they work well, but I do not agree to paying full price for a clearly pre used/returned item.
I will test the router tomorrow and will update the review, and also contact Amazon regarding a partial refund or return.

I tried 3 of these Smart Hubs all with the same problem. It seems it can't cope with my setup for some stupid reason. Shame on BT who can't make a router that works properly. It's better than the Home Hub 5 when it works but there's something that this can't cope with but the Home Hub 5 can. I don't know whether it's some fault with the line or a device connected to it that's causing the malfunction. I don't have time to pinpoint the problem because I have other people in the house who need the smart devices to work otherwise they moan at me.
