The 4th edition of the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Neurology is written by leading specialists in different areas of veterinary neurology. In addition to covering the innovations referred to above,
it focuses on the practicalities of diagnosis and treatment that veterinarians in practice and students need to know. The Manual is therefore an excellent resource for veterinarians with an interest in neurology and neurologists, and also of interest to those specialising in imaging, critical care and internal medicine.
The Manual is divided in three parts:
The first part begins with a comprehensive description of the neurological examination, and includes full colour photographs and video (on DVD). Lesion localisation, clinical pathology and the use of neuroimaging are discussed alongside further examples of the advanced use of MRI in neurodiagnostics and the use of specialised imaging techniques in neurological patients. The section concludes with a chapter on genetic diseases, including a list of available DNA tests (on DVD).
The second part deals with neurological presentations based on a problem-based approach to the patient. The extensive images and illustrations in these chapters are of high quality and undoubtedly of value to the reader. Coloured tables and separate text blocks for terminology both emphasize important issues and increase reader-friendliness.
The third part of the Manual covers therapeutics including anaesthesia and analgesia, neurosurgery, radiation therapy, rehabilitation of the neurological patient and the use of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine. For those interested in this last area, references and guidance on further literature are provided on DVD.
In my opinion this updated BSAVA Manual is a practical, easy to read handbook for every veterinarian dealing with neurological patients in general practice or referral patients. The accompanying DVD is a valuable addition to the 4th edition, and includes a comprehensive list of references and further literature on all topics covered in the manual, as well as more than 120 video clips. The video clips cover the full neurological examination, which is especially helpful for those with little experience of working with neurology patients. Other video clips cover topics such as recognizing neurological symptoms in future patients, taking tissue biopsies, rehabilitation techniques and the use of acupuncture in neurological patients, and are likely to be useful to all practitioners. The basic organization of the earlier editions is retained in this Manual. The first section of the Manual discusses the essential requirements for making a neurological diagnosis and includes: neurological examination; lesion localization and differential diagnosis; clinical pathology; electrophysiology; and neuroradiology. The neuroradiology chapter represents the greatest change, with more detail on the advanced imaging techniques, while retaining thorough descriptions of radiographic techniques. A new chapter on tissue biopsy is also included in this section.
The second section of the Manual focuses on different presenting problems. A number of chapters, including coma, stupor and behavioural change, neck and back pain, and tail, anal and bladder dysfunction, have been added since the previous edition due to the overwhelming increase in information now available on both new and previously described diseases. Each chapter in this section presents the diseases in a similar way, detailing clinical presentation, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.
The final section of the Manual contains completely new chapters devoted to therapeutics. The chapters include: emergency presentations (detailing spinal trauma, head injury and status epilepticus); anaesthesia, analgesia and supportive care; clinical pharmacology; radiotherapy; neurosurgery (indications and complications); and rehabilitation of the neurological patient.
The chapters throughout the Manual are accompanied by stunning specially commissioned full-color illustrations.
