What a great idea - BRITA filtered water on the go. And how nicely executed. A clear BPA-free plastic bottle, with a clean white cap and colour-coded silicone detailing.
A simple activated charcoal filter disc fits under the lid - just run it under the tap for a minute before use to ensure it's wet through and you're good to go. Then just fill up your bottle and suck the water through the mouth piece to get clean-tasting filtered water.
In theory, it's great. In practice, there are a few down-sides that become apparent through use.
First off, you HAVE to suck the water our of the bottle. It's your sucking that draws the water through the filter-disc and purifies it. That's why the bottle comes with a straw. You can use it without the straw but I'd bet you don't for long as you'll find it makes a dreadful slurping noise as the breather-hole in the lid allows air to bubble through the lid and into the bottle.
Second, the first few mouthfuls after EVERY fill will end up giving you a wet patch on the front of your shirt as water drips out of the screw-thread of the lid. I've taken to refilling it and wrapping with a piece of tissue to try and catch it, but it still occasionally catches me out.
Thirdly, the filter disc needs replacing on a weekly basis to stop them from getting too grubby or becoming the home to bugs and bacteria. OK so you can stretch it a little bit, but as there's no way to tell if the filter is still effective or, more importantly, safe you're better off replacing it on the same day every week, so the costs will add up. Likely still cheaper than drinking 2l of bottled water per day, but it's worth bearing in mind.
I like it. I use it. But every time I fill it up I groan at the inevitable spill... I wonder if there will be a v2 product that doesn't slurp so much and doesn't drip.
