There's a BRITA Meter in the lid, which is "the first intelligent cartridge exchange indicator with 3 Way measurement of water quality". This is somewhat convenient because it tells you when to change the cartridge. However I'm not too sure whether this actually gives an accurate measurement of the water quality, or it's just another posh version of the 'Memo' indicator found on some other BRITA jugs, which typically tells you to change after 1 month. This speculation initially came up as I saw the metering pins were actually in contact with the unfiltered water at the top part of the jug (i.e., not yet being filtered through the cartridge), so measuring the quality of unfiltered water is pointless in my opinion, and I can't justify the quality of unfiltered tap water changing from 100% to 0% over a matter of weeks. Well, I could be wrong, perhaps I haven't quite grasped the measuring mechanism of it yet. Anyway the other evidence was that, I went on a 1-week trip during which I obviously didn't use the jug, but the indicator still prompted me to change new cartridge after about 1 month of use (I didn't use it heavily in the other 3 weeks either). Having said that, even if it's just another version of 'memo' indicator which promps you to change the cartridge after 1 month, it's still better than not having it at all.
There is, what at first seems to be a good idea, in that there is a flap on the top through which you can fill the jug from the tap without removing the lid. However, when you pour water through the flap a very small amount of water is left sitting on the edge between the flap and the top. This quickly evaporates and leaves a hard water deposit on the plastic which is virtually impossible to remove.
The lid itself is a very tight fit and difficult to remove so it not easy to overcome the above mentioned problem by not using the flap and removing the lid before filling from the tap.
The meter, which is supposed to measure the amount of hardness in the water and tell you when to replace the filter does not work. It is just a timer that tells you to replace the filter after four weeks. The timer also stopped working after about a year.
I have now binned my filter and replaced it with a basic filter BRITA Marella Cool White Water Filter Jug at about half the price which actually works. I would recommend that you do the same.

Perfect Jug. The clock counting the expiry of the cartridge actually is not counting correctly. Looks like as soon as you reset it and never mind you how often you use the jug it... Read morePublished 9 days ago by Amazon Customer
Second one to replace the same model I had for a gazillion years and ended up quite yellow. The filing cap that lowers itself automatically is a stroke of genius. Read morePublished 11 days ago by Team Frog
