I was so disappointed. I have enjoyed at least two of his novels over the years but this one should be tossed in the dustbin and not even recycled. It should be burnt.
Although I enjoyed this story. It lacked something the first two had.
This time out, Kane and his trusted secretary, friend and occasional lover Lucy. Find themselves helping a fellow American who is in trouble in the Philippines.
If you have been following this series? It was the Philippines that was a focal point in the previous book called Ice. Where, Kane was employed by Jenny Garcia.
Each book tells a different story but, there are references in each book to things that have happened before. The main characters are beautifully described and I can picture them as they almost come to life and this makes me believe that the characters are real. Mark and Lucy are both very likable characters and the dialog and dynamics between them helps to lighten the tension because each book deals with serious subjects, death, murder, kidnapping, blackmail deceit and plenty of humour. Several of the characters re - appear in the books, Kane’s brother Duncan also appears in two of the books, but only on the phone. He runs a survivalist school in Vermont wilderness, for people who want to survive in dangerous places like war zones. I’ve a feeling that he could re- appear in one of the books sooner or later. All the books in this series are well plotted and they have good endings. An added bonus is that the author has published the first 5 chapters of each book on his website so you can read them first to see whether it’s your choice of book. The Author even lets you read the first few chapters of his 5th book which hasn't been published yet.
I think it’s best to read the books in order because the first book introduces the characters, Mark (private investigator) and Lucy. The writer is able to evoke tension, suspense and an abundance of humour in his books, as well as some tearful moments, I think that all the books are an excellent read and I congratulate him. Five stars. More please
Great characters, plot and pacing. I have only just read that Hemmings was a lawyer so now understand his way with words and perhaps his understanding of both sides of the law. As a PI rather than the police, there tends to be more grey areas than solid black and white. Who doesn't like a slightly naughty good guy. Lucy is very likeable too. Already thinking who I would like to play the characters in a film
