"While "The Artist" was good and innovative - for my money "The Help" should have been the Best Picture winner at the 2012 Oscars. Brave subject matter - beautifully and powerfully acted - even-handed Direction. And it's a stunner to look at on BLU RAY too with genuinely informative Extras. See REVIEW..."
"How good is it to see Woody Allen genuinely return to form. Like "The Artist" in ways only in colour. There are 3 BLU RAY versions the US issue is Region-locked leaving only the French and Italian issues for UK film fans - they play with subtitles. A looker too as a BLU RAY."
"Has received mixed reviews and I can understand why, but I loved it. Liam Neeson puts in better acting chops in the opening 10 minutes of this than most do in a lifetime. Nice to see Dermot Mulroney step-out of his pretty boy roles too. Neeson (the people's champ) returns soon in Luc Besson's Taken 2 and that looks suitably blinding as well."
"Superb little Indie film with James Gandolfini, Kristen Stewart and Melissa Leo all shining. Directed by Jake Scott (relative of Directors Ridley and Tony Scott) - its a small film with a big heart and even bigger performances. Only on DVD in the UK at the moment. See REVIEW "
"Ryan Gosling (this man is everywhere) teams up with Steve Carell and the gorgeous pairing of Emma Stone and Julianne Moore for this couples morality tale with a great script and top actors. See REVIEW "
"Luc Besson again (dont you just love his films) giving us a sort of girly Indiana Jones meets The Mummy meets Jurassic Park fab fun and a great bit of light entertainment. BLU RAY looks lovely too. See REVIEW "
"An array of famous Directors and Actors give us wildly differing vignettes of their favourite American city. Some dont work but the ones that do are funny, cool and even beautiful. It also features stunning city cinematography that the US BLU RAY fully brings out (plays on UK machines). Give this a chance "
"A fantastically entertaining Rocky with Robots kids/adults movie. Hugh Jackman is a top leading man and his journey in reconnecting with his son is believable. A huge US hit - youll yelp with pleasure when it ends. Its also a Lowry Digital transfer (did Avatar) so it looks awesome on BLU RAY."
"There are few movie-fans who wouldnt sit through anything with the awesome Paul Giamatti in it and the proudly low budget Win Win shows you why. He gives it heart and hurt in equal measure. Its the kind of sports film youd see a trailer for on other rentals and say to yourself that looks good. Youd be right "
"A stunningly inventive robbery/heist film where two crews rob the same bank on the same day but things twist into something altogether more pressing when all the people trapped inside (staff and customers) start being killed off for some reason. Funny, entertaining, cleverly written. See REVIEW "
"A Parisian man seems to have it all wife kids great job and his beloved hobby of photography. But an event surrounding his wifes infidelity throws his whole world into disarray. He then undertakes a journey across Europe and beyond. An intense story movie. I thought it was great and even to the end youre guessing. See REVIEW "
"In some ways this is an irritating film about socialites with shed loads of money and their self-centred issues (weve been in this territory before) but its the quartet of actors given meaty material that will keep you glued. Sam Worthington shows acting chops we havent seen before - but Kiera Knightley is simply stunning. She should have been Oscar-nominated for this..."
"A duo of ace actors take on unsettling and controversial material - and get right under your skin. Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman have always been good - but Director Paddy Considine gets them to shine here. Its relentlessly downbeat feel wont appeal to everyone file under ...a difficult watch worth the difficulty."
"A gritty thriller in which a wealthy girl (Gemma Arterton) finds herself at the bedbound mercy of two men who seem entangled with each other (Martin Compston is the idealistic young buck while Eddie Marsan is the older manipulator). She then realises the identity of one of her kidnappers and worse his intentions. Unpleasant at times but utterly gripping - and the trio of leads are exceptional."
"Along with The Descendents this was George Clooneys other film of 2011 and its an American election-tricks/truth-tailored-to-suit potboiler. Throw in Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Woods and the ever-brill Phillip Seymour Hoffman and it bobs along rather nicely. Not quite as good as Michael Clayton (see review) but close enough "
"The huskily-voiced and gorgeous Jessica Brown-Findlay (Lady Sybil in Downton Abbey) makes her film debut in this small but entertaining British film about a would-be-writer trying to find her way past a flighty daughter (Felicity Jones), a frustrated wife (Julia Ormond) and a cheating husband (Sebastian Koch). DVD only at the moment."
"Mindblowingly good animation, a witty script and clever story - all voiced by the Deppster and other such vocal luminaries (Bill Nighy is particularly good as the snake). Very adult and very knowing. Great fun..."
"One of the great unsung heroes of American independent filmmaking (300+) - Roger Corman gave career starts to Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Sylvester Stallone, Tommy Lee Jones, William Shatner and even Directors Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard. This affectionate look back contains interviews with many of those grateful recipients. Some of the truly cheesy exploitation footage is hilarious..."
"I liked this film so much I had to buy it on BLU RAY. "Kick-Ass" rocks in a way that few movies do. Its the manic in-jokes of "Scott Pilgrim Vs The World" meets the warm superhero family fuzziness of "Spy Kids" with a serious kill-or-be-killed attitude. Nicky Cage and Mark Strong so good - but the movie belongs to "Hit Girl". Check it out..."
"Far better than it had any worldly right to be both the allure of this iconic woman and the superlative cast (especially Michelle Williams as Monroe and Branagh as Laurence Oliver) make this a very touching watch indeed. Its almost impossible to properly get under Marilyn but Williams gets so close its scary. It looks beautiful too on BLU RAY and the extras are illuminating."
"Follow-ups are always tricky, but Guy Ritchie delivers in spades. Downey Jr and Law superb as Holmes and Watson, but the genius-move here is the introduction of another dynamic duo a chilling Jared Harris as arch-enemy Moriarty and a perfectly-cast Stephen Fry as Holmes smarter brother Mycroft. The only downer is that the BLU RAY picture is strangely lacking and the Digital Copy a bad joke..."
"Not every one liked this "Hanna"/"Bourne Identity" wannabe I did. A woman-in-the-field-operative is set up and she literally kills her way to her betrayers one by one (top male ensemble cast). Kickboxing champion Gina Carano pulls off that remarkable feat of being agile, graceful, sexy and believable in this gritty Steven Soderberg spy film. Tremendous set pieces in Dublin."
"Theres a school of thought that says only the British could make something as downright funky as "Kinky Boots" and then give it a beating heart. Chewetel Ejiofor bravely dons the transvestite garb and sings in a London nightclub in this shoe-factory up North finds a new audience for its products down South movie. Just dont mention burgundy boots - its red or dead baby!"
"Despite some thoroughly ugly and overly graphic hostage scenes in this much-contested remake it keeps you glued to your seat. Superb twisting whodunit-plot with a brilliant ensemble cast especially a mesmerising Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. There are those who say the original film is better and the book is the best - but come to this fresh and I reckon youll not dismiss it so quickly..."
"A man (Sam Worthington) steps out onto the ledge of a Manhattan building 20-stories up and threatens to kill himself unless he can speak to a female hostage negotiator who lost her last talk down. But what does he want? And where are his friends? And why is property-magnate Ed Harris worried? A hugely likeable film. And an Eva Mendes type star is born in the gorgeous Genesis Rodriguez."
