This excellent dictionary fills a gap which even the best ordinary dictionaries hardly even try to fill: what prepositions to use with nouns and verbs; and when two or more can be used, what are the differences in meaning. Strongly recommended.

As a corrector of English texts and an occasional translator, I find this book indispensable. It is one of my bibles on English usage. For those in doubt, which I often am, it is an excellent reference tool particualarly for phrasal verbs and conventional word associations.

This is a wonderful tool for the advanced learner of English as a foreign language, and probably occasionally for the native speakers too.
A perfect complement to dictionaries (the user must already know the meaning of the words they want to look up in BBI dictionary), it provides information on HOW TO USE the words correctly (right preposition, sentence structure, collocations, etc).

Many examples are included in the entries for extra clarity. Abbreviations indicate the language register (formal, colloquial, etc)or that a word is used differently in British English (=BE) and American English (AE).

Here are three examples :
"rendition" n. 1. to give a ~ 2. a letter-perfect (AE), word-perfect (BE)~

"norm" n. 1. ["standard"] 1. to establish, set a ~ 2. to deviate from the ~ ["average"] 3. above; below the ~

"cruel" adj. 1. ~ to, towards (~ to animals) 2. . ~ to + inf. (it was cruel of him to say that)

An excellent reference book.

This has undoubtedly been the most helpful book I have ever used in writing in English. I urge non-English native speakers like me to get it at once! You will soon see how your style gets better, more natural, and therefore more appealing to native readers.

Although one can look almost anything up online these days, it is practical to have a list of suitable collocations to hand. I find that I often end up using a word I did not initially think of myself, after having read it here whilst wanting to confirm another collocation.
