This is the fourth language course of this series I have purchased and I must say that I am most pleased. The general layout is very similar to other courses of this series and is certainly just as enjoyable and helpful. Accompanied by two CDs, this step by step course offers you the best opportunity to start learning a beautiful language that will open doors into the friendly cultures and societies of Portugal and Brasil.
Containing 10 lessons altogether, each lesson consists of key phrases and exercises, covering a certain topic (e.g. in a bar, asking for directions etc.) Each lesson is followed by a general revision exercise and a quiz. There are also three Checkpoints in which all of the past lessons are revised. Useful information about the country itself and its people is given throughout the topics. The course is designed extremely well.
The language itself is in my opinion divine and sadly highly underestimated. Although it is similar to Spanish and various other Latin languages, it has its own bases and origins. Portuguese is truly a wonderful language to have.
If you are interested in learning Portuguese, then this is surely the course to start off with.

This was the CD course recommended to me by my language teacher. It comes with 2 CDs and a booklet to which it constantly refers. And therein lies its weakness.

The actual Portugues is fine, and it's all upbeat and jolly in attitude. But firstly I don't think they repeat the phrases anywhere near enough, nor slowly enough. Coupled with the constant references to Page this and Exercise that, it quickly becomes difficult to follow what it is you're meant to be doing when playing the CD in isolation - in the car, for example.

And the music jingle at every opportunity will have you reaching for the off button too.

I will persevere to the (bitter) end having bought it, as it does actually contain the Portugues I need to learn; I just wish it was organised better, without constant references to the booklet and without that very annoying jingle!

Does exactly what it says on the box but I would prefer to have the jingles between sections replaced by something less strident - or removed completely! It moves along at quite a pace and it might be nice to have newly introduced words repeated.Otherwise, superb value. Obrigado!

I found this language set quite frustrating - the recordings are spoken very quickly, making it hard to pick up on the pronunciation of words. Often the activities start without introduction and the lack of repetition added to the frustration I felt whilst trying to learn the language.

It would be more useful if each Portuguese word was followed by its phonetic spelling in brackets, allowing readers to shape words correctly.

On a rather more picky note - the tinny and repetitive music was annoying and tedious.

This is a basic course that covers useful material for tourists to Portugal. Its bite-size learning chunks makes it nice and easy to follow. It covers the basic scenarios and is good for a learn-at-home programme.

As with most teach-yourself books I didn't get very far - you really need to go to a class and use the book and CD as excellent extra practice. It was very clear, however, and helped to get my ear into the strange Portuguese pronunciation before we went on holiday.

It's taken me a long time to find a Portuguese language course and this was the recommended book to work with.
A great introduction and helped when shared with a partner to initiate dialogue. Fun and easy to follow.

I like it because it moves along quickly but you can go back and repeat. The music between the sections is a little annoying a bit like ads on the tv.. but its useful basic vocab. and it helps having Portuguese speakers from different areas saying the phrases. I will stick at it.
