As a chartered physiotherapist dealing with back and neck pain, I welcome this little gem with open arms. It’s a trimmed down, more succinct, user-friendly version than the first edition. It’s not too long, so patients will read it. Cover to cover takes about 20 minutes.
George Ampat has effectively done a 180 on his long career as a consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon, and now champions conservative management and active self-help for back and neck pain. His vast experience has brought him to this point of view and he’s not afraid to share it. In fact he shows great humility and moral courage in doing so.
The booklet is packed with golden nuggets of handy, easy to understand information expressed in lay speak. The simple illustrations help the reader to relate and grasp the concepts. There’s an encouraging example of a patient’s full recovery from a disc bulge, including the pre- and post-injury MRI scans, taken a year apart. Seeing is believing! The advice about managing pain and the balance between doing too much or too little, is nicely presented. Some generic back and neck exercises are offered at the end that are easy to follow with clear illustrations and sensible dosages.
Overall, this is a simple and relatable resource for patients and clinicians involved in the treatment of back and neck pain. It has the power to allay patients’ fears and send them in the positive direction of self-help exercise therapy, which is in accordance with the NICE Guidelines on low back pain. Disproportionate fears have been proven to increase the experience of pain, so this little booklet is like a gigantic pill, but without the side-effects of other painkillers! Highly recommended.
‘Knowing is half the battle’. This short self help booklet gives that basic knowledge about the back to those affected with chronic back pain with simple explanations and images. As a surgeon treating these conditions, I know how important is such knowledge to overcome the fear of movement. It becomes a easier battle after that to overcome back pain or reduce the suffering. It also gives advice on when to seek immediate medical help which is important. A booklet I would highly recommend.
I couldn't thank enough as soon as I received the books I started putting ibto practice the exercises and I noticed a significant improvement with the back, shoulder and neck pain. I couldn't recommend it more. Its easy to follow, practical and you can actually see improvements. Many thanks.
A very accessible little book which explains reasons and solutions for back and neck pain. The text is accompanied by diagrams and concisively covers topics such as medication, medical procedures, posture, Pilates. The last section of the book gives clear illustrations of exercises to strengthen core muscles, conquer back pain and regain and maintain a healthy spine. Highly recommended.
This book should be in every household. Very informative, fantastic illustrations and easy to put into practice. Even as a medic I prefer simplicity and brevity. Sometimes it is not easy to achieve it together. Dr Ampat does it so well. So please buy it and keep it in your medicine cupboard - it will benefit everyone. Well done Dr George Ampat! Hope you keep writing books like this!
Well written book explains problems faced by the back and shows diagrams and MRI scans. Tells you correct postures that should be used. I find most useful the exercises i put aside 15 mins a day to strengthen my core to give my back support these are all clearly shown and easy to follow.
This book has been excellent, it has shown me clearly how to perform back exercises required for my bad back. The diagrams have been clear and easy to follow and the explanations have been simple and easy to understand. I love the step by step exercise guides with pictures showing you each position you need to be in. The book is superb and a must for any individual looking to improve their back problems.
It feels as though this booklet is written by someone who understands the pain and overcompensation involved with back pain. The exercises are excellent and I feel that it's a better alternative to injections and surgery.
