Product description

Product Description

From the British blues boom of the 1960s emerged some exceptional individual musicians; Cyril Davies, Eric Clapton and Peter Green being among the most notable. But there was no doubt that the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation took the prize as the most talented blues band, one with no weak links. Although rarely mentioned in the same breath as Ginger Baker, Keith Moon or John Bonham, all the musicians knew that Aynsley Dunbar was a world-class drummer in any popular genre, easily a match for the better-known names. Together with bassist Alex Dmochowski, they formed a rhythm section unmatched on the blues scene for its drive, finesse and the ability to swing. In Victor Brox, the Retaliation had one of Britain’s finest blues singers, a multi-instrumentalist and prolific composer. Uniquely among the blues bands, the majority of the Retaliation’s recorded output was self-penned, most of it written by Brox. And guitarist John Morshead provided a master class in ‘less is more’; a blues player of taste and fluency rivalled only by Peter Green.

Aynsley Dunbar grew up in Liverpool and by his mid teens was already playing in local jazz bands, inspired as he was by the great American swing drummers like Buddy Rich and Joe Morello. He worked his way through the ranks of Liverpool beat bands including comedian Freddie Star’s band, The Flamingos and the Mojos where Sweeney star Lewis Collins was his bass partner.

This cd contains the first 2 of the 4 albums released by the Retaliation in the late 60s. Having seen all the top blues bands during that time I would definitely rate them in the top 3 (with the Bluesbreakers and Fleetwood Mac). The band features Victor Brox (one of the best British vocalists - and great keyboard player - of the last 4 decades); John Morshead (a wonderfully lyrical guitarist who has been criminally overlooked in the various "polls" since the 60s); Alex Dmochowski (terrific bassist) and Aynsley Dunbar (who went on to play with Zappa, Jefferson Starship, Journey and many more). Listen particularly for 2 beautiful minor key slow blues on the 2nd album, featuring sublime guitar playing. The band swing on the fast songs (unlike many of their contemporaries, who plodded), and the whole cd oozes class, but with lots of genuine blues feel. The only possible lowspots are quite long bass and drum solos on the first album, but they are well played! Highly recommended (and buy the other double set as well - one track, "Downhearted" is worth the price on it's own!).

A criminally overlooked addition to the British Blues scene of the late `60s, the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation recorded some classic albums that should be in the collection of any lover of the genre.

This excellent twofer collects the first two of the four albums they recorded. The quality of the music is superb, they really captured the feel of genuine American blues, but managed to stamp it with a distinctly British accent. The tracks are all originals, penned by the group, and evoke the New Orleans/ Chicago style of blues. But this is no mere copycat exercise, there is an experimental, jazzy tinge to the sound, sometimes reminiscent of early Jethro Tull or Blodwyn Pig, that adds depth to the music. And I love the lyrics, meaningful and memorable, backed with some classy and elegant musicianship.

In this release the two albums have been nicely remastered, and have an excellent sound. There is an informative booklet, with an interesting essay. The two discs and booklet are collected into a foldout digipack the same size as a normal jewel case. AN excellent release of some excellent music. Highly recommended to all fans of early Tull, Keef Hartley, Cream and the like.

My older brother had the first record on this disc when it was released, and I always liked it, nice to have it on CD now, and I decided to get this double CD never having heard the 2nd, Dr Dunbar's Prescription. Dr D's p is very standard blues rock, fine if you like it and well played by fine musicians, but for me it has little of the atmosphere, distinction and character of the first one.

The first, The Aynsley Dunbar Retalliation (with the "reflected images" cover is blues rock, but with a more swinging feel and much more musical variety and imagination, so I think it has appeal beyond straight blues fans. True, the 2 bass and drum dominated tracks are arguably a bit long and indulgent by modern standards, but the playing, especially Dunbar's, is astonishingly creative and skilled. I find it hard to understand why surprisingly few drummers have listened to this recording, because Dunbar is superbly musical and masterful. The production is great, everything beautifully clear and audible, but with a great smoky club atmosphere as well, such clarity but not clinically clean, it's a gem.

If you are just getting in to the british blues of the sixties this is a great package. If like me you bought them when they first came out on vinyl it's a great excuse for playing them again. Oh joy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Retaliation/Dr Dunbar's Prescription 27 May 2008
By Stuart Jefferson - Published on Amazon.com

Two disc set. Disc one approximately 34 min./disc two approximately 38 min. Digitally remastered. Aynsley Dunbar formed his band Retaliation in the late sixties along with many others during the British blues boom. The name was a direct response to John Mayall who had recently fired him. The rest of the group all had backgrounds in various blues groups in England. Their music was not straight blues based, incorporating a jazz feel to the timing in their songs. All four members of the group were strong players on various instruments, and in Victor Brox they had a good song composer. Both albums contain mostly originals written by the group.

Their sound could sometimes be derivitive but at that time what British blues group's sound wasn't? Both albums are very much a group sound with individual solos held in check-refreshing for a change! This music is not the kind that hits you over the head on first play. It takes a few plays to really appreciate their music. They were one of the few groups playing their own style of music using the blues as a jumping off point.

Both of these albums were not originally available in the U.S. so had to be purchased as an import. Once again good music was deemed not commercial enough to be released in America. What a shame. Anyone with an interest in British blues would do well to pick up this package. Its not often that a blues group from this era follows their own path instead of being merely imitators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Blues Rock n' Roll 10 Aug. 2007

This CD is great and the digital remix is even better. Aynsley Dunbar is one of the greatest drummers of our time and this was his first effort to do his own thing. The AD Retaliation band was huge and had/has a world wide fan base. Aynsley was eventually recruited out of this band by Frank Zappa to become one of the Mothers and complete another successful chapter in his career.

This is GREAT music written and performed by a GREAT drummer! Thank you Aynsley for this fantastic CD!
