For a railway that only carried passengers for 30 years, and goods for a further 32 years, through a sparsely populated part of England, this book is amazingly well researched. It covers the building of the two railways that became the Axholme Joint Railway, and their early operation. There are then three chapters giving details of the route, one on rolling stock, one on traffic, and a final one on closure. Throughout it is illustrated with pictures, maps and reprints of original documents. For such a rural line, the range of pictures is breathtaking, and the book is well-produced. As befits such a railway, there are some delightfully quirky stories, including a farmer who moved his entire farm from Scotland to Epworth by rail, and the final passenger train, which was chartered by North Axholme Secondary School just four days before final closure.
