This is a scintillating read. The characters of Alex and Gabriella are highly visual and fairly leap off the page. Alex is a guy the girls will warm to with hidden depths and strengths. Gabriella is an intense, complex character and one that will excite and intrigue the boys.
The story captivates the reader from the beginning. The plot unfolds with a quick pace, promising a roller coaster of a ride with twists and turns at every corner. It is one that will take you into the night. I love the writing style which is succinct and clean, not wasting one word, which is the mark of a clever and skilled writer. As for the comparison with Twilight, this book is individual with an original approach. It has an electrifying story with exciting depths and textures that grab the imagination, that thrill with the emotions and interactions of the characters. I would highly recommend this. Unputdownable.

This book was really great! I couldn't put it down, or turn the Kindle off when I was reading it! It's got some great characters, and whilst a bit obvious in some places, I felt that the author really captured England well, and reminded me of my school days too! It also made me cry in a couple of places, as the investment in the characters was really built up and made me care about them when things happened.

Looking forward to the next book already! :)

When I first started reading this book, I wasn't sure if I could relate to the down-trodden Alex, and a few times I found myself wanting to tell him to pull himself together. But before I knew it, I was racing through the book, cheering Alex on (in my head) and when I thought back to who Alex had been I was glad I got to share that journey with him. The battle scenes/action scenes are so well written I was practically skipping words in my excitement. The book is hugely visual, I never once felt that I couldn't imagine what a character or a room looked like. It springs to life from the page and becomes almost like a movie where you forget you're reading and plunge straight into the world of The Awakening. I've always loved this genre, but I really like how this book moves away from the (let's admit it slightly cliched) Vampire world and into a much cooler wider supernatural plane with faeries and skinshifters and stuff.

All in all I laughed, I cried, I raced through the scenes in suspense. What more can you ask for? Highly recommended and looking forward to the next ones in the series!

I have to say I do not get all the references some of the other reviewers have made to Harry Potter and Twilight. It doesn't have an owl toting magician in it or a lovesick girl drooling over a sparkly vampire either.
It is however a book I would recommend to YA and adults alike. Although it has a vampire subplot, which some either like or love to hate, it is more of a fantasy meets supernatural and a strong teenage message to boot kind of book. Any book that draws the attention to bullying is commendable, especially the verbal and physical abuse that takes place in schools. Saying that I also think the writer spent too much time reflecting upon the main characters emotions after he has discovered his powers.
The various supernatural or fantasy elements and/or figures are more along the lines of champions fighting the evil creatures that would like to extinguish humanity. An entertaining read and it will be interesting to see what the next installment brings.

Having returned my previous kindle purchase - it was sooooooo slow and hadn't got going after 50 pages - I wasn't overly optimistic as I began reading The Awakening.

Well, have I ever been more wrong?!

The story starts slowly, but you can feel it building, new characters arriving, existing characters developing, from very early in the book. As the story builds, so does the excitement. And it carries on this way until the very last page .... and I do mean the last page!!

Yes, you know the story type. There's a hero with skills that develop ...... a love interest ..... also with skills, there's a very bad baddie ..... and there's a good punch-up as the end approaches. Predictable? Possibly. But there are twists and turns along the way and the twist at the end leaves you logging back in to Amazon to get the next book in the series ...

........ WHICH ISN'T YET AVALABLE!!!!!!!!!!

For that reason alone a should give this book zero stars! But this story deserves 5 because I couldn't put it down.

I was recomended this by a freind and I have to say sceptically started to read it (I'm no fan of the Twilight/Hunger Games teenage fiction genre)only to be pleasantly surprised. This book has a very British feel to it which I think is missing in a lot of books, that helps to draw the usually ignored British reader in. The characters are fleshy and well developed, dialogue is tight and after the opening build up the story thumps along at a terrific rate, throwing you right into the imaginative world the author has clearly spent some time developing. I can see where the Twilight references are coming from but I really feel this book offers something new, if it catches on, this book will be huge. Can't wait for the second chapter!
