With this new studio album, Caliban really make themselves stand out as the leaders in the Metalcore genre at present. Not only do they produce blistering songs but they are one the few bands who can also produce an entire blistering album. We have seen this time and time again with their previous couple of releases and you will certainly see it with 'The Awakening'.

From the first track through to the last we hear crunching guitar riffs, brutal breakdowns galore and some of the most powerful vocals present in this genre. It really is an aural pleasure to behold, words cannot do this justice. I have been a fan of this band for a couple of years now and based on this effort, I will be for years to come!!

Openeing track 'I Will Never Let You Down' is possibly one of the best songs they have written. It features the harsh sound identified above but has an enormous chorus characteristic of Caliban, only difference, this one is up there with the strongest to date. The same could also be said for 'Another Cold Day', another standout from this genre defining record.

My words cannot do this album justice however, I can only begin to sing the praises this album deserves, I would really recommend you at least give this band and album a chance, I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

This album is SO much better than Opposite From Within, I wouldn't even know where to begin. The songs are not nearly as predictable structurally, the clean & screaming vocals are WAY better, and the production on this album is by far the best Caliban has ever sounded. Keep it up, guys!

I'll be honest, I've wanted to take my appreciation of Caliban to a higher level for some time now. After keeping tabs on them after their signing to Roadrunner Records, I was finding 2004's 'The Opposite From Within' and last years 'The Undying Darkness' quite unfulfilling affairs. This band has had problems really pushing to become a leading light in the metalcore scene, as too many of their songs were lacking much in the way of creativity, flair or identity. Fast forward to today, and the band have released another long player, 'The Awakening', and it might just be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Everything the band does well is improved on with 'The Awakening'; the songs are tighter with more variety, leaner, heavier, more cerebral and crushing than anything I've heard from them before. The band's clean choruses remain, and soar especially high on album opener 'I Will Never Let You Down'. The breakdowns dont define or bog down the songs as much, and are especially lean and mean in 'Give Me A Reason'. The band just seemed to have learnt how to write better songs, even if mostly all thats changed is their guitar tuning. Such a seemingly small thing brings with it a darker and heavier mood, evident in the faster numbers like 'Let Go' and highly intense 'Nowhere To Run, No Place To Hide'.

In my eyes, Caliban have had trouble stepping up to become a leader of the metalcore genre aswell as an originator, and whilst this album isnt a huge departue it could certainly change a few minds. 'The Awakening' stands as an impressive progression for the band and a great example of intense and impressive metalcore. As I Lay Dying should take note; this is how to make this music sound interesting.

I was lucky enough to be able to hear this album at a store playback and as soon as I heard it my attention was grabbed and this is something all the more hardcore metal fans will wecome readily! It mixes harsh vocals, melodic vocals, awesome riffs and killer drumming. The songs are fit for clubs and gigs and shows how talented the band are. Caliban fans will love it and other metal fans will respond well! This is one of 2007's finest album, not one to be missed!

Caliban have released their second album in a year and the cynic in me wonders if this is to fill their quota with record label roadrunner, for one thing is certain, this album was not advertised with the same urgency as leant to roadrunner darlings Trivium,i may be wrong but this could well be the last album produced by roadrunner, the label did the same with chimaira, ill nino and countless others,so we will see.

Regardless, this is a great album,an album that is alot better than 2006s 'the undying darkness',this is the sound of a band with a bite again, the sound of an album who do what they do with a sense of purpose and style, the band never stray from the bounaries of the metalcore scene bar the use of synth which they have never really used before.

The album opens with the frantic ' i will never let you down' which races along like a bullet, screams give way to clean vocal chorus' more often than not,but thats the metalcore way and caliban aint ready to turn their back on the flagging scene just yet and in some ways they have breathed new life into the genre. The album is packed with great tracks filled with riffing of the highest order, the usual breakdown segments, drumming that would challenge the fillings in your teeth to leap out of your mouth and memorable chorus.Granted, one or two tracks are a bit weak but not a disgrace so all in all this is an album that wont change your views on the metalcore genre but could well show you that caliban aint ready to give up the ghost yet.
