Vivienne Freeman is a Havenwood Falls High student. When out for a run something attacks her and leaves her for dead. When the reaper comes for her soul, a male angel is compelled to save her from him.
Breckin Roberts is that angel. He has known Vivienne for years but has barely spoken two words to her. It comes as a huge shock to him that the compulsion he feels to save a stranger turns out to be one to save her. He gets her away from the reaper, and he heals her wounds before wiping her memory of the whole event. It comes as a huge shock when he realises that the memory wipe hasn't taken. What is so special about her that he was so compelled to save her, and that she remembers what happened?
Vivienne is grateful to be alive but of course, is shocked when she finds out the whole story about Breckin being an angel. She is also shocked to realise that she is hugely attracted to him and vice versa. How could that be when they haven't even been friends up until now?
Their attraction has to take a back seat when it becomes obvious that the reaper won't give up on Vivienne and will do all in his power to get her back. Breckin won't let that happen and the fight is on. Does he manage to keep her safe, and what of their relationship, how can it progress with so much hanging over their heads?
I really enjoyed this story despite expecting there to be more going on within the school rather than outside of it. What happens was so engrossing that it wasn't long before I didn't care about the school not being featured much at all. Good versus evil, a father who should be good but is the extreme opposite, expectations for Breckin that he doesn't want to fulfil, but may not have a choice, and of course the budding romance between Vivienne and him. There is a lot going on in this story and although it has a satisfying ending, the story continues in a sequel due out in 2018 to let us know what happens next. I will definitely be reading it!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers' copy of this book.
So this wasn't my favorite Havenwood Falls because I just feel complete with the story like the others. Yet I did enjoy it and I really liked how in the end it said Vivienne and Breckin's story will continue so that will for sure be great to read.
Even though this takes place in Havenwood Falls I didn't really get that vibe from it and I am not quite sure why I guess because their friends didn't have any of the supernatural powers that the other books brought up. It is really hard to put it a certain word to it all.
We are introduced to Vivienne who I guess was attacked and Breckin just happen to be flying around and was drawn to her. What ends up happening is Death can not claim her now and it sets into a chain of events that Breckin and Vivienne do not fully understand. Yet his father does. It is a bit mysterious to what his father knows as we don't seem to get a lot information until towards the very end of the book.
I do think we needed more backstory to this book to make it a whole lot better. I did like the whole angel and reaper thing going on as I have always enjoyed stories with those kind of characters. I just think a bit more depth to it would be awesome.
Finding her soul mate could just about be the most dangerous thing Vivienne Freeman has ever done. Certainly she’s come closer to death since meeting her soul mate than ever before but, thank the angels, Breckin has the power to heal her.
As with other novellas that fall within the Havenwood Falls High series the intended target audience is far younger than I am, and this may well contribute to the fact that whilst I enjoyed to story I didn’t necessarily enjoy it as much as some of the other novellas. That being said I look forward to Michele G Miller continuing Vivienne & Breckin’s story in summer 2018.
Miller managed to strike a perfect balance in order to leave the reader intrigued by the mysterious male protagonist and the likeable female one. Things were revealed in a good order so that you were not left with massive plotholes or thinking that you may have skipped a page by mistake!
The slight back story we're given also stopped us from feeling like this would be another case of insta-love and was rather a confusing but slow burn sort of romance for the protagonists.
I would definitely recommend this!
The most wonderful thing about Havenwood Falls is that you get to read a bunch of new authors. You get to experience the worlds other authors live in.
Awaken the Soul is magical. It makes you believe that there are guardians out there that are watching over us. The writing is beautiful. The characters are perfect and their chemistry is something that can’t be described.
