Sexy and suspenseful, Awake turns the disturbingly real phenomenon of "anesthetic awareness" -- in which surgery patients, though completely paralyzed, are conscious of everything they are experiencing, including the pain -- into a "completely absorbing" thriller (Roger Ebert). When failed anesthesia leaves a rich young tycoon (Hayden Christensen, Star Wars) alert but immobilized during open-heart surgery, he overhears a devious plot to have himself killed. Co-starring Jessica Alba (Sin City) and Academy Award-nominee Terrence Howard (Crash), Awake does "for operations what Jaws did for the beach" (Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter).

During his operation he finds himself awake and able to feel everything and hear everything. He learns that his doctors and his new wife are in cahoots to let him die on the table so they can get his billions but, they haven't met his mother.
In this 2007 conspiracy thriller, Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen) needs a heart transplant and secretly marries Samantha "Sam" Lockwood (Jessica Alba), his mother's personal assistant. As Sam and his mother, Lilith (Lena Olin), await completion of his surgery, Clay suffers anesthesia awareness exposing his Dr’s plot to murder him and that Sam is part of it, but what will he do with the cat out of the bag?
This takes a slow character building start before getting into it’s stride, but it makes the story harder hitting once it kicks in and if you haven’t read the reviews etc, there’s a good twist in the tail. Decently acted, it really comes together toward the end but much lacks suspense [lose a *].
The single disc loads to 5 trailers before main menu offering play, scene selection, set up [5.1/DTS/2.0 and English subtitles on/off] and special features [audio commentary, making of, deleted scenes, storyboard, blooper reel]. As a 15 rating it has plenty of swearing and some intense surgical scenes. Does for surgery what ‘Jaws’ did for swimming. Well worth a try, but not for the surgically squeamish, but if you’ve read the plot, don’t bother as it’ll lack tension.
Even though there could have been better ways in which Awake's premise could have been accomplished, director Joby Harold makes the film so visually sumptuous that it doesn't really matter. Hayden Christensen is quite good in a classic man-in-peril role, and equally good is Jessica Alba playing Hayden's two-faced girlfriend.
Admittedly, there were moments in this film which made me take a step back and consider whether or not I'd accidentally picked up a feature-length version of Casualty, but a good story, a fast pace, a tiny running time and lots of cringe-worthy scenes make Awake a considerable amount less grueling than some reviewers would have you believe.
Give it a go!
The twist was actually a pretty big shock to me, I didn't see it coming at all. And as the movie only runs for 75 minutes it's kept short and sweet. So how anyone can say it's slow surprises me, but we all have our likes and dislikes.
So if you're in the mood for a classy thriller then I would definately check this one out. After renting it the other night I will most definately be adding it to my DVD collection.
