For your money you get the core software plus a collection of plug-in software which you are given the option to install or to install later. The box also contains a green screen which takes up most of the box ! Only simple install instructions are provided on paper and the manual is on a disk. If you want a printed manual you have to order it at extra cost - bit of a cheek at the price I think, although other Video packages also do this (Serif being an example ask for money for manuals and guides, I don't remember any software recently coming with a printed manual anyway! )
The software loads but you do need to register first with them and give some details. After this the core software installs quickly with the option to install the plug-ins as well.
I am used to video editing and the interface is pretty straight forward but might look complex to a beginner. Avid works by importing from a source, editing and then saving out to just about any media type which is a bit more than offered by some competitors. It also allows the creation of slide shows and simple photo editing.
I am using this on a very high end machine with an SSD drive, Core i7 CPU with 16 Gb of RAM. I use this sort of hardware as from previous experience video editing is always very 'hungry' for memory and speed. I think in all the years I have been using a PC or MAC video editing software has always needed the fastest and biggest hardware to work efficiently and without falling over or freezing in some way. I also tried it on an older Quad Core with 4 Gb of RAM and an ordinary hard drive and it was painfully slow. So what I am saying is you need lots of hardware power to run this software in a quick and stable way.Read more ›
Now as far as actually using Avid Studio goes I have come from using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 10 and Avid is much easier and more stable, even though my current PC has the minimum spec for Avid to run, Avid still takes less than half the time Vegas did to render a DVD, approximately 1 hour vs 2 1/2 hours. I use several video sources and qualities from SD to HD to produce a weekly church DVD. (nb I use HD camcorders even though rendering to DVD because the colours look much better) Vegas would crash at least every other week, Avid has crashed once over 7 weeks. Vegas would run out of memory if I used more than two cameras and some pictures. Avid copes fine with 3 cameras, two sound tracks and over a dozen pictures.
The lack of 64bit was fairly annoying but it is such an improvement on Vegas that I am still happy with the purchase.
From initial review, I am fairly disappointed on a number of counts
- Claims of 64-bit support - On Windows 7 64-bit it installs in the 32-bit applications directory which to my understanding means it's a 32-bit application that has been run on Windows 7 64-bit. I suspect (although I've not checked it) that it will have the 4gb memory limit (I'm happy to be corrected on this)
- Price - it feels very similar in terms of functionality (although more intuitive usability) to Sony Vegas which seems to be about half the price. I'm struggling to justify the price difference
- Centralised library for all source videos - this is designed to make life easier (it watches a directory where you store your videos) but to me it's irritating. I have my own workflow where I track which videos I've used in projects and which I don't. This watch folder means I can't do that (not easily anyway). There are benefits to this though which I've described below
- Product differentiation from Pinnacle - although clearly a better product I'm not convinced Avid can justify offering both these products. I think they should be combined into one. This is the first iteration of Avid Studio so does it spell the end of Pinnacle?
- The initial user interface feels crap.Read more ›
