To cut a long story short, the unit is very choosy when it comes to recognising drives that are connected to it.
The unit came with an old firmware on it that would only read my very old USB stick, my 2 newer ones would not be recognised.
I used this ancient USB stick to update the firmware to the latest version. Using this version (3.2.0) the ancient USB stick was no longer recognised but my 2 newer ones were!
The Toshiba 500GB HDD that I installed internally was not recognised either. I created a single partition on it and formatted it as NTFS, but no luck. Eventually I got it recognised by cloning my windows 7 NTFS boot disk and then reformatting the primary partition afterwards (leaving the boot sector on it). Heaven knows why this makes a difference as the Avermedia support is woefully lacking and just tells you to format the HDD NTFS, no further details offered. Their online forum isn't a great deal of help either.
Once up and running though I am really impressed for a sub £100 bit of kit.
The firmware revisions have meant that video is now saved as MP4 (rather than AVI previously) so you don't need to convert to edit in the likes of Movie Maker etc.
In the real time mode I didn't notice any lag and the picture didn't look any the worse for wear (okay mabe a tiny bit) being passed through the box, although the wires they supply from the box to the TV could be a little beefier and better insulated against interference. I have actually ordered a set of component leads to replace the supplied ones as I think they will improve the signal a little.
Overall very pleased with it, and just want to forget the nightmare it took to get it setup! If I didn't know the ins and outs of PCs/HDDs etc, I wouldn't have had a hope of getting it working.
I'm not sure but I'm probably the only one who gets weird green pixelated artifacts after converting it with a official converter and putting it on vegas. So if you are having issues putting video files on Vegas or VirutalDub DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE CONVERTER FROM THE OFFICIAL SITE. Download the ffdshow H264 codec instead and install it. Then it will work.
If you have any question or problem using this device then contact me by this e-mail since I am finally very confident since I researched for 3 days straight to get rid of interlace lines and get proper codecs.

The device prefers if you format both the hard drive and USB memory stick in NTFS, which is fine, but the Mac doesn't natively support NTFS.
So....once you've copied the videos to the USB memory stick, you'll need to install FUSE on your mac to be able to read it, once done, you can read (but not write) the memory stick.
If you wish to edit the video in iMovie of Adobe Premier Pro, you'll need to use the likes of Handbrake to convert the video into a MP4 format.
I know the device doesn't say it plays nice with Mac, however I would have thought in this day and ago, video formats were pretty standard.....not with this, it uses an AVI file with H264 MPEG-4 (part10) video with mpga 128bit audio, which seems to annoy most video editor.
All in all a great device, but a pain in the butt to get the video off of (on a mac)
ps, 'Eject media' does bad things....it unmounts both the internal and USB drives....I suggest never using it.
It comes with all the cables you need to connect the PS3, (and probably an Xbox) to your TV. Has some handy little settings on it as well to stop any sort of input lag as well.
One thing to bear in mind is that it's worth keeping an eye on Avermedia's website for Firmware updates. These are very simple to install, just download the firmware update onto a USB stick, then plug in the USB stick to the AverMedia Game Capture box, goto the menu system, goto update and follow the on screen instructions.
All in all I was very happy with this device and recommended it to fellow gamers who wanted to record their game play.
P.S. Also bear in mind that ANY game capture device for the PS3 which says it will work with an HDMI cable is lying. Sony encode the HDMI signal being sent from the PS3, which means that any recording device trying to record from the PS3 HDMI signal won't be able to. They have done this to try and stop piracy of DVD's/Blu-Ray's.
